Though a twin bed is large enough to support shorter adults, taller individuals will need to find another option if they don’t like their feet dangling off the end. While there are plenty of larger mattress sizes including full, queen and king, for a solo sleeper, they may not be worth the floor space.

The logical choice for such users is the Twin XL, or extra-long. This adds the length to support tall sleepers without sacrificing too much additional floor space. Mattress Dimensions A Twin XL is the same width of a standard twin mattress, but adds 5-inches to the length. The overall dimensions of the mattress are 39 inches wide by 80 inches long. The additional length makes it unlikely to fit on an existing twin bed or frame. Bed Dimensions The overall size of your Twin XL bed will vary by style. If you don’t have a headboard or footboard, your frame will be the same size as the mattress and you can plan on the dimensions listed above. Plan on adding an additional 2 or 3 inches each for a standard headboard or footboard to the overall length. The width may also be wider depending on the design of the bed. A highly decorative bed may be larger than this, so check with your manufacturer for dimensions if your head or footboard appears to be oversized.
