It's hard for a little boy to sleep in heavenly peace on a saggy living room couch.
Too many children don't have a bed to sleep in. Too many end up sleeping on the floor, on a couch or in a chair, night after night. Every child deserves a bed. It's a basic need. But hundreds of children in Northeast Ohio don't have one. Remember your childhood bed? My sister Mary and I shared a small bedroom with two twin metal beds. We bounced back and forth on those beds playing alligator tag. We read Nancy Drew mysteries under the covers. We whispered in them at night and shared our secrets. Tom Gaghan, executive director of the Cleveland Furniture Bank, told me the need for beds is as great as ever. "Because of the overwhelming number of requests, we had to put a limit on how many beds we could provide each family," he told me. "We're getting swamped with requests." He's rationing beds because he doesn't want to exhaust his resources and discontinue the program entirely. "I felt it was better to stretch the dollars and provide some beds to each family than not be able to provide any," he said.
Let's provide the rest of those beds. The furniture bank created the Beds 4 Kids program in 2012. Since then, it has given away 4,100 beds, to children between the ages of 2 and 17. Each year it provides around 1,200 beds. That's still not enough. One hundred kids a month get to sleep in a bed; What does a bed mean to a child? On Cleveland Furniture Bank's Facebook page, there's a video of a sweet girl giving thanks for her bed: "I love it so much because it's really cute." Tom shared a few stories that touched his heart. Angie escaped from an abusive marriage, lost her job, and had to move into a shelter. She has three sons, ranging from 2 to 13. In July, she was able to get beds for her children. She told the staff, "Picking out pieces of furniture was like picking up the pieces of my life. When the delivery truck arrives, I am going to set it all up so that when my three boys come home and see their new beds they will be surprised and it will be like Christmas."
Fatima has 4 children ages 15, 14, 7 and 6. She fled an abusive relationship to start a new life in a safe place. Here's how her youngest child reacted when she heard she was getting a new bed: "No more sleeping on the cold floor with my cheek pressed to the brick? My cheeks will be warm under a soft blanket?" Let's warm their hearts, too. A local manufacturer provides a new twin bed and mattress for $109. The furniture bank works with 250 non-profits who confirm which children need beds. Beds 4 Kids serves Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Geauga, Summit and Medina counties. Most of the need is in Cleveland, the inner-ring suburbs and the city of Lorain.No money is taken out for administrative costs. A bunk bed costs $204, which helps families who don't have a lot of space. If $109 is too much, you can recruit family, friends, co-workers or church pals to jointly buy a bed.
