Sadly the hotel wants to charge us a phenomenal amount for a cot - and wont confirm the availability of a cot. Sadly we dont seem to have a lot of options in changing hotels - this appeared to be the only one in our budget that has a suite arrangement to allow our son a space to sleep in the evenings - so we are considering the need to purchase a reasonably priced travel cot as soon as we arrive. An air mattress would be a better idea and easier to carry (you can even take it home, but it weighs a few pounds). The nearest Bed Bath and Beyond would be a starter place to search. There are no stores in Long Island City but you can find them in Manhattan or in Queens, closer to rhe airport. What time do you arrive? Although an air mattress may well be a better option, our son is used to a cot = and to be honest its about his safety as he will be asleep in the bedroom in the evenings whilst we are in the lounge, and I dont want him wakign and wandering. Parenting choice so for us its a cot only. We arrive late the first night which makes it all the more stressful! I suspect there may be a UK/US problem here ... I'm not sure what a "travel cot" is. In the US, a "cot" is a basic bed, like a hospital bed, often on wheels. Hotels wheel them into rooms to be an extra bed, and they're popular with avid campers. But most Americans don't carry them around. US things you might be referring to would be an air mattress (for larger children), a crib (for smaller children) or a playpen/playard (for under-3s.)
You can get all of these pretty easily in NYC. You're staying at the Country Inn. I just checked the Bed, Bath at 61st and 2nd and it has this nice air mattress for $69.99: When our daughter was under 3 we'd put her down in one of these, which you can get at the Toys R Us in Long Island City, a few subway stops from the hotel: Guys, after seeing message 3, I think what we mean by "cot" and what he means by "cot" may not be the same "cot." Mark Alex, in the US, this is what the word "cot" means: There is a Bed, Bath and Beyond store right at the 63rd Drive-Rego Park station of the M and R trains. The address is 96-05 Queens Blvd, Rego Park, NY, which means it's right at 96 St and Queens Blvd, which also happens to be at 63rd Drive. 96th St is north-south, 63rd Drive is east-west, and Queens Blvd is diagonal to both. These are Queens addresses and have nothing to do with the more well-known Manhattan addressing scheme. To get there from the Country Inn (which is on Crescent St which is like 29th St), find the below-ground "Queen Plaza" station (one block east of the elevated "Queensboro Plaza" station).
Take the Jamaica-bound E train one express stop to Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Hts. and change for the M or R train to go 4 stops to 63 Drive (or just take the M or R from Queens Plaza the 10 stops if it comes first). If you want to pick up an air mattress on the way from JFK (I assume that's where you're landing), take the Air Train to Jamaica, the E train to "71 Avenue-Forest Hills" and the M or R train the two stops to 63rd Drive. Buy what you need, then continue "towards Manhattan" on the M or R and get off a Queens Plaza for the hotel. This store is halfway between the airport and your hotel. I assume you mean what Americans could call a travel crib. (They deliver for a fee.) or a Toys R Us store not too far away in Queens on Northern Boulevard. However, when browsing their sites for "travel cribs" I did not see anything for a price as low as you quoted. I think what you're looking for is a portable baby crib. We used one of these when traveling when our daughter was an infant.
