Pollara, 49, of Tamarac, Fla., with felony burglary after he was allegedly caught stealing brushes from a Hobby Lobby in Lombard on July 3. He was charged with felony burglary and is being held in the county jail in lieu of $125,000 bail.Prosecutors said authorities had been tipped that Pollara would be traveling to Illinois from Florida, and he was apprehended with the brushes hidden in his pants near the small of his back as he left the store on Roosevelt Road.
Pollara made headlines in 2012 when he, his 70-year-old mother and another man were charged in the big money, multistate theft of Lego toys from Toys R Us stores.Prosecutors in Broward County, Fla., said Pollara would steal by placing a valuable item, such as a high-end Lego set, into the packaging for a relatively less expensive toy, which he would purchase. He would then sell the expensive item online. His mother acted as a lookout, authorities alleged.The scheme and other organized shoplifting generated more than $2 million for Pollara, who told Florida authorities that he used the proceeds of his thefts on lavish travel. Florida law enforcement officials said that in a span of 200 days, Pollara used his rewards card at 139 different Toys R Us stores in 27 states. "He's been a world traveler, all funded by organized retail crime," a Broward County sheriff's deputy told the Sun Sentinel in Ft. Lauderdale in a 2013 story. Florida police say they raided Pollara's home and found it chock-full of shopping bags filled with unopened merchandise.
According to court records, Pollara was declared mentally unfit but, after treatment, was convicted of grand theft.
