TINTON FALLS - You can get great deals at an outlet store on clothes, shoes and accessories. Now, you can get a great deal on toys.Toys R Us Inc. opened an outlet location on July 1 at the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets in Tinton Falls.“

Outlet retailing has been really popular. We’re really seeking to capitalize on that trend,” said Alyssa Peera, Toys R Us spokeswoman.Outlet centers have been doing well generally, and it looks like their presence is gaining momentum, according to a 2015 report by Value Retail News.North America boasts 215 outlet centers, with 41 opening from 2012 to 2015 and 60 more projects in the works, according to the report.Simon Property Group, which owns the Jackson Premium Outlets, the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets, and the Ocean County Mall has the largest outlet portfolio in North America, with 86 centers, according to the report.GREAT TOYS: 8 toys made in the USA, where to buy themTOY TECH: 5 great toys that use technologyRETAILING: Several new businesses fill local strip mallsToys R Us started opening outlet locations in 2010 and now has 30 locations, with eight in the tristate area. The outlet stores average 2,500 to 5,000 square feet, compared with the typical big-box store’s 45,000 square feet.

The products also vary. Some outlet store products are exclusively bought and sold at outlet locations – they won’t be found at a traditional location or online – which allows them to be sold at a lower price point.Popular name-brand toys, such as Lego and Barbie, are still carried at outlet locations, but those items will be sold at the same price point they would be in a traditional Toys R Us location.MORE: New stores come to Pier Village in Long Branch“For the last seven years Toys R Us has been losing market share primarily to Walmart,” said C. Britt Beemer, founder and CEO of America’s Research Group in Summerville, South Carolina. “Toys R Us wins when the consumer wants a great selection, Walmart wins with great prices.”The retail toy market is dominated by Costco Wholesale, GameStop Corp., Toys R Us and Walmart, according to research firm IbisWorld.“Whether it (Toys R Us outlet stores) works or not is another question, because consumers are still going to expect a very strong selection,” Beemer said.

Peera, the Toys R Us spokeswoman, said the retailer's outlets have been a hit with customers. The Jersey Shore Premium Outlets hosted Toys R Us popup locations since 2009 for holiday shopping seasons. The last time a popup was located there was from April to July 2014, Peera said. The popup locations were “really well received by our customers,” Peera said, so the company opened a permanent location in the shopping center. With the outlet and traditional locations as well as an online business, Toys R Us gives consumers options when it comes to shopping, said Adrienne Appell, a toy trend specialist with the Toy Industry Association Inc.“People definitely go online and do a lot of price comparison, but some people prefer shopping and going into a store to touch, feel and see,” she said. “Grandparents and more traditional (people) might feel more comfortable shopping in-store.”BARGAINS: 29 ways to shop the Jersey ShoreMORE: From hot dogs to luxury apartments in Sea BrightLast year, the toy industry saw a bump in sales, despite seeing static growth for the last decade, Appell said“The toy industry is doing extremely well.

In 2015 the toy industry was up about 7 percent in 2015 versus 2014. That’s a pretty big deal considering it’s been modest growth … from the decade before,” she said.In 2015, the toy industry saw an estimated $25 billion in sales, according to the Toy Industry Association. That bump comes from new innovations from toymakers that blend traditional toys with technology; new products that support kids’ favorite movies, such as "Star Wars"; and a cultural shift that sees parents making more time for play.“I think toymakers are really doing a terrific job at innovating and staying at pace with technology and competing with a lot of different things kids can be doing,” Appell said. “They come up with some really cool toys that kids can interact with physically and virtually.“People are taking notice that play is an essential part of a child’s life,” Appell said. “We’ve seen an uptick of that movement. People are making a conscious effort and deciding to shut off their phone and play a game with their family.”

FOOD: Roy Rogers restaurants coming back to ShoreWill the outlet model sustain consumers’ expectations about traditional Toys R Us selections? It’s a concern, Beemer said, if the company isn’t stocking brand names that consumers recognize.Peera maintains that the outlet locations will still have a great selection, just at a lower price point.“I think it (brand name) depends on the consumer, quite honestly, just like some people who shop for clothing are much more label conscious,” Appell said. “Parents look for (product) that’s going to be interesting and engaging for their child and that’s not going to be the same for everyone.”In 2015, Toys R Us’ most popular brand names were Lego, Fischer-Price and Barbie, according to Brand Finance.MORE: New apartments, stores for Atlantic HighlandsThe real question is, do brands matter to children?“As kids get older and hone their interests, they’ll gravitate towards certain products,” Appell said. “The old stuff doesn’t really change.
