Now he’s building impressive, award-winning mosaics that have been displayed across Canada and the USA. Photo courtesy of Dave Ware Ware, now a Lego building veteran and a custom brick artist, has been attending BrickCon is Seattle for five years as well as Calgary’s own Brick Roundup, which returns this weekend.

We caught up with Ware to hear his tips on becoming a Lego building champion, finding artistic inspiration and avoiding those dreaded Lego injuries. “I think everyone has their own path to inspiration, but for me, I find inspiration in the things I’m already interested in, or in things that catch my eye and stick with me. The best creations are the ones that start out as a little thought, and continue to keep rattling around in your mind until the demand that you create them.” “I tend to do a lot of drawings and think about how things will come together before I start actually building. Of course, once the building starts, there’s a lot of new ideas being added and removed. The final piece rarely is exactly like the first idea — for me anyway.” Photo courtesy of Dave Ware. Mayor Nenshi with a Lego mosaic created by Ware. “It depends on the size of the piece. The big ones are anywhere from 40 to 100 hours, usually spread over a number of days.”

“I use all different sizes of brick, and I tend to not count as I go.” “Everyone drops a piece now and then, but my main advice would be don’t hurry when you’re carrying something you’ve built. Keep it stable, build so that things don’t fall off and carry pieces on something solid, like a board. Towels and blankets are your best friend for transporting things in a vehicle — anything to lessen shock and vibration.” “To avoid stepping on bricks, either make sure there are none on the floor or sweep your feet like you’re in the ocean around stingrays. Never step directly down. Everyone talks about how it hurts to step on a piece, but the true pain lies in kneeling on one.” “The best creations are the ones that start out as a little thought, and continue to keep rattling around in your mind until the demand that you create them. My favorite pieces tend to be things other people have created.” Jimmy Fallon with a Lego Fallon mosaic. “Many of our members are great builders, but I don’t think anyone would claim to be a Master…that which the amateur calls genius, the veteran calls practice."

“Have fun, find the things that interest you and take lots of pictures. Look to see how things are put together and whether the builder has added small touches and details. For me, the most important thing by far is that pieces have a story.” The second annual Brick Roundup takes place on June 14 and 15 at the Alberta College of Art + Design (1407 14 Ave. N.W.) A few notes on building your Mission Models from our Engineering Technician, Mike… Make sure to take your time! All Mission Models serve a purpose/function, so improper builds can cause large flaws in the game Make sure to grab all parts listed in the top left corner of each step. Remember, when grabbing parts, make sure that you take note of the color and length that it calls for. Organizing beams, axles, and other elements by length, can help decrease error margin and can sometimes help save time. Watch for pictures of what you are building. There may be assemblies or subassemblies that need to be built more than once and will include a 1x, 2x, 3x… etc.

The symbol shown below (Figure 1) signifies an orientation/view change. Make sure to orient the model to mimic the view shown in that step. It is also important to note that teamwork is key with tasks such as these. It will take a single person many hours to complete a Challenge Set. With a team, however, the work can be divided among many people. Remember: Many hands make light work. Working with a team not only can make for light work, but can also help decrease the margin of error. Having several individuals following along, helping with the build, and/or checking your work, makes it significantly harder to make those same mistakes you may have made on your own! The Seal is built slightly differently than other models we see this year! He is built from left to right, as opposed to up and down. This causes a lot of orientation changes in the build instructions. Make sure you pay close attention to the orientation/view and adjust/rotate to mimic orientation shown in that step (See Figure 1 for symbol used when model is going through an orientation change).

The Beehive may look simple to build, but make sure to take your time! This is the first model that includes a true mechanical function that may affect the overall outcome of your team’s performance if built incorrectly! After you have completed building Bag 2, you should find that you have an extra black connector peg. Set this aside, because you will need it in the assembly of Bag 4. Bag 3 has quite a few orientation changes. Remember to pay close attention to the orientation/view and adjust/rotate to mimic orientation shown in that step (See Figure 1 for symbol used when model is going through an orientation change). The Panda Release Model also has quite a few features that are easy to put in the wrong location. Make sure to double check your work! This bag is missing a black connector peg, but no need to fear, you will find a few extras throughout other bags! If you held onto the black connector peg from Bag 2, GREAT! You can use it here! If not, still no need to fear, there are a few more extras in Bag 10!

As for the model building, this Bag contains the Service Dog and Man. This assembly has many moving parts and little facets. Pay close attention to your build and remember to double check your work! When building the Bat, it is important to have the Bat facing in the right direction when hanging. It will matter for the Animal Conservation Mission. The models have a very specific way they should be facing! Much like Bag 5, this bag consists of two more animals used in the Animal Conservation Mission. The Flamingo and Reindeer Models have a very specific way they should be facing! Remember to pay close attention as you did in the previous bag! This bag consists of many connector pegs that have very specific locations on each of the beams. Make sure to double check that you have located each connector peg in its correct position before continuing to the next step. Bag 8 – This Bag contains the Milking Automation Machine. Some would say that this is the most mechanically involved model this season.

That being said, there are many things to make note of when building this model… First, make sure to take your time! There are many mechanical function that may affect the overall outcome of your team’s performance if built incorrectly! Secondly, this assembly has many moving parts and little facets. As for the build of this model, there are a few features to point out, so I have done so by page number (numbers are referring to the number in the bottom right corner in the grey space). On Page 60, you will need to push the cows onto the red connector pegs all the way On Page 69, make sure you pay extra attention to the orientation of the red tank On page 73, watch for the alignment/placement of the silver pipes. The last thing I feel needs to be mentioned is that it is important to make sure that the milk/manure (white/black) pivoting chairs are not being compressed by other LEGO elements. This would cause them to not fall freely as they should. This could cause a key mechanical function to not function properly and that, in turn, may affect the overall outcome of your team’s performance if built incorrectly!
