Two men have been arrested and charged with disassembling a vehicle after the owner positively identified it on Craigslist. “I woke up at six o’clock in the morning and it was gone. I know that it was there at one o’clock in the morning,” said theft victim Kenny Munyon, talking about his 1949 Ford Shoebox. The classic car was stolen in May of this year.
For the past few months, Munyon and a friend were checking Craigslist, hoping to find the “hot” car. “I found the ad and immediately I had a couple hunches, a feeling that this might lead to his car,” said Munyon’s friend Aaron Bartanian. Munyon and Bartanian called the number listed on the Craigslist ad and arranged to meet the seller. They did not see the car, but rather parts of it. “When we got to the first place, there were only a few little parts that could have been mine, but not totally mine until he brought out the steering wheel. Once we saw the steering wheel, I knew that was my steering wheel,” Munyon said. Detectives say Johann Cass and Mitchell Landau were running a chop shop at two houses in Woodland Hills. Neighbors said that they had no idea. “Well they were making a lot of noise. It sounded like they had Sawzalls and all sorts of machinery, back there. The thing was that in the middle of the night they were doing all this stuff in the middle of the night and I just thought that they were getting an early start,” said neighbor David Travis.
The two suspect face charges of operating a chop shop. As for Munyon, he now has the parts of his classic car back and is laughing about his new part-time job. “Yeah, mostly it was my friend; he did all the detective work.
