By Patricia EscarcegaPhoenix, Scottsdale, and Tucson Local Expert September 3, 2015 In Tucson, nature comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, it comes in the shape of prickly, humanoid saguaro cacti on the side of the road. And sometimes it shows up on the evening horizon, where the desert sun paints brilliant red and yellow watercolor sunsets. At Tucson Botanical Gardens – one of the city's most beloved places to experience the beauty of the outdoors – a traveling exhibit is bringing nature to life in a totally different way. In fall 2015, the garden will begin hosting a popular traveling exhibit called Nature Connects, Art with LEGO Bricks. Visitors of all ages can experience the wonder of over-sized, nature-inspired sculptures – all made entirely out of LEGO pieces.

Tucson Botanical Gardens will be showcasing nature-inspired LEGO sculptures through early 2016 — Photo courtesy of Tucson Botanical Gardens Tucson Botanical Gardens is the first and only venue in Arizona to host the exhibit, which features 13 larger-than-life sculptures created to look like animals and insects. The sculptures will be placed on display alongside the garden's various walking trails. Some of the giant LEGO creations include a snapping turtle; and a bright orange, six-foot-tall monarch butterfly. One of the exhibit's most popular sculptures, however, is titled Hummingbird and Flower, which captures a massive hummingbird hovering in mid-flight, drinking from a trumpet flower. The sculptures were painstakingly constructed by acclaimed, certified LEGO artist Sean Kenney. Kenney used more than 500,000 LEGO bricks to put together the massive pieces, which were designed to show the connections between art, play, nature and design. Some of the sculptures, in fact, weigh more than 500 pounds.

To celebrate the exhibit and inspire LEGO builders around Arizona, the garden is holding a LEGO brick design competition. The contest is open to LEGO builders of all ages and skill. Finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their original designs in the garden during the exhibit. On select dates, the garden will also have a LEGO brick playroom packed with more than 50,000 individual LEGO bricks. Visitors can sit and construct their own creations during a guided activity alongside expert LEGO builders. The garden is also planning to screen The LEGO Movie monthly during the exhibit run. Check the garden's website for specific event dates and times. The Nature Connects, Art with LEGO Bricks exhibit will run from Sept. 11, 2015, to Jan. 3, 2016, at Tucson Botanical Gardens. The garden is open daily (with the exception of major holidays), and guests can visit the exhibit from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission to the exhibit is $18 for adults and $9 for children, with discounts available for garden members.

Cowboy Up: Experience an Authentic Western RodeoLearning By Example, Net Neutrality Violations What is Net Neutrality? Everyone likes to joke that it’s boring and complicated but it’s really neither. While I try to give a good introduction to Net Neutrality, and what violations looks like, in my post The FCC vs. Net Neutrality some people, myself included, learn best from examples. Piggy backing off of a post […] How “The Lego Movie” is Really About Copyright This weekend I finally got around to watching The Lego Movie. My watching it was long overdue, I was a Lego fanatic as a kid, and the movie had been recommended to me countless times since its release. Of course I loved it, it’s a really good movie. The kids love it because it’s a […] Behind the Image is Photo Metadata I recently got back from a very awesome trip to the Amazon where, among other things, I spent a day climbing up some extremely tall trees to check out the canopy. One of the guides, Leionide, who assisted in this little adventure was kind enough to snap some photos of our climb and let me […]

The War On Brown People: Why My Heart Rages and Sorrows The issue of colonization, segregation and marginalization of brown people in the United States is a vast and expansive problem. However in the last couple of weeks, several factoids and news stories have emerged that give texture and context to the dimensions of this war. Leaked Photos of Detained Minors First were the leaked photos […] Living in Tucson Arizona the impacts of immigration and border militarization are a part of daily life. Over the years friends have been deported, neighboring families have been torn apart and my white privilege is the only thing that keeps me from being harassed by border patrol agents on a regular basis. However for the […] The Net Neutrality Debate Lacks Imagination While I find the net neutrality debate extremely important and interesting, I can understand how other people fail to see why they should care about the issue, or how it could effect their lives. I believe that this failure is due to a lack of imagination in the network neutrality debate.

The general public has […] Reset The Net is a movement launching June 5th to promote a secure internet to counter the surveillance practices by organizations like the NSA. Kevin Glass and Timothy Lee on Bloggingheads One of my favorite website Bloggingheads.tv hosted a great conversation several weeks ago between Kevin Glass of Townhall and Timothy Lee of Vox on the topic of Net Neutrality (of which I’ve written most frequently about here and here). The conversation was very interesting, Timothy Lee is one of the best on the topic (and is […] FCC vs Net Neutrality (Part 2) On May 15th FCC chairmann Tom Wheeler officially unveiled his new ‘net neutrality’ proposal and the commission voted on a partisan 3-2 line to move forward with the proposal kicking off a  three month public comment session before a final vote takes place (take action below). I recently wrote a very thorough rundown of the net […] The FCC vs Net Neutrality O n April 23rd the Wall Street Journal reported that the FCC was preparing to release new Open Internet (aka Net Neutrality) Rules that would allow for broadband providers to offer paid ‘fast lanes’.
