SAN DIEGO, July 21 (UPI) -- New characters from Warner Bros. upcoming animated comedy The Lego Batman Movie, have been revealed including The Joker and Robin. The images of the Lego-fied Batman characters released by USA Today give fans a better idea of what to expect when the film opens in theaters Feb. 10, 2017. The Joker, voiced by Zach Galifianakis, was previewed alongside his main squeeze Harley Quinn with both characters seen sporting a more traditional, comic book-style outfit different from how they appear in the upcoming Suicide Squad. Speaking with USA Today, director Chris Mckay mentioned that The Joker in Lego Batman will see "himself on the same level as Batman, a peer at the top of his game." "But Batman says that's not the case, which sends Joker into a spiral trying to prove to Batman that he is indeed the greatest enemy," McKay continued. Batman's trusty sidekick, Robin The Boy Wonder voiced by Michael Cera, was also showcased wearing a sparkling cape, big green googles, light hair and an unflinching smile.

The character, McKay explains, will be portrayed as overly optimistic and happy, something that will clash with Batman's brooding, dark demeanor. "Robin is a super-positive kid who always sees the glass as half full. Really, at the end of the day, he just wants a hug," McKay says. "Michael brings the sweetness and honesty." The filmmaker also promised that more Batman characters, including his iconic rogues gallery, are also set to make appearances in the film. The sneak peak comes as Lego Batman is expected to have a big presence at the San Diego Comic Con with Warner Bros. releasing a comedic video featuring The Dark Knight (Will Arnett) telling fans to show up to the convention in order to score a selfie with the Caped Crusader himself. "Hey nerds, let's get this #LEGOSDCC party started with an announcement from the one and only LEGO Batman," the studio captioned the clip on {link:Twitter:Hey nerds, let’s get this #LEGOSDCC party started with an announcement from the one and only LEGO Batman. #SDCC2016https://t.co/ZnOXgWm8OO— LEGO Batman (@LEGOBatmanMovie) July 19, 2016

Warner Bros. Animation has released a round of new pics from “The LEGO Batman Movie” that give us our first look at Joker (Zach Galifianakis), Harley Quinn (voice actor yet to be announced) and Robin (Michael Cera) in the film. USA Today debuted the “LEGO Batman Movie” photos, which you can check out below, in addition to some previously released stills from the film: Director Chris McKay (“Robot Chicken”) said of the film’s take on the Joker-Batman dynamic, “The Joker sees himself on the same level as Batman, a peer, at the top of the game…But Batman says that’s not the case, which sends Joker into a spiral trying to prove to Batman that he is indeed the greatest enemy.” McKay revealed that, in the film, the LEGO Robin is a child that Bruce Wayne accidentally adopted from a charity auction. “Robin is a super-positive kid who always sees the glass as half full. Really, at the end of the day, he just wants a hug,” McKay said. “Michael [Cera] brings the sweetness and honesty.”

The film is set to explore Batman’s unwillingness to have a sidekick, and the annoying quirks that come along with having a Robin. “Lego Batman is ‘About a Boy’ as directed by Michael Mann…This is a single guy who suddenly has a kid literally drop into his world.” “The LEGO Batman Movie” hits theaters on February 10. But as it turns out, the studio is also be debuting a much different version of the legendary character this week, with USA Today showing off the first photos from The LEGO Batman Movie, arriving in theaters February 10, 2017. Along with the first photos from the animated movie, the site reveals that the first trailer will arrive Wednesday, March 23.Back in 2014, Will Arnett voiced the mini-fig version of Batman in The Lego Movie, which went on to become a box office hit, taking in $257.7 million domestically and $469.1 million worldwide, from a $60 million budget. That movie's success lead to Warner Bros. announcing a number of spinoffs, with The LEGO Batman Movie arriving first next February, followed by Ninjago (September 22, 2017) and The Lego Movie Sequel (May 18, 2018). Will Arnett returns to voice Batman in this animated sequel, revealing to USA Today that the Lego version of the Batcave has gotten some serious upgrades."The Batcave is even better than we remembered it, it's awesome.

But I also love getting into the ho-hum day-to-day of being Batman and what it's like to fight crime each day. Like the idea of Batman oversleeping his alarm clock makes me laugh. It really does humanize him."The story centers on Batman's solitary life in the Batcave and the only meaningful relationship in his life, with his butler Alfred (voiced by Ralph Fiennes). The plot thickens when Batman's world is upended by the arrival of two sidekicks, Dick Greyson, a.k.a. Robin (Michael Cera) and Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl (Rosario Dawson). Here's what director Chris McKay, who served as the animation director on The Lego Movie, had to say about the story, teasing that several other well-known superheroes will be featured in cameo appearances as well."We thought if we can tell a well-rounded, funny story that's action-packed, we can build a big movie around this character. Batman is an island onto himself, the only thing he doesn't have is relationships. We're making About a Boy as directed by (action director) Michael Mann.
