The list, posted by Only In Your State, says Irish Rose Saloon serves up one of the best in the state. According to Only In Your State, “This buzzy spot is famous for fresh ingredients, so you know those Bloody Mary toppings will taste delicious!” The Irish Rose Saloon website also sells Bloody Marys on Sunday at special price of only $5. Bloody Marys have gotten so high brow these days it’s hard to figure out who makes them best.

In a crowded playing field, it appears the Irish Rose Saloon makes the best in Rockford. Which Rockford restaurant or bar do you think makes the best Bloody Mary? Fragments were included in the now out-of-print Criterion Collection laserdisc. Wellesnet reader Tadao had the opportunity view what remains of the silent film last fall in London and posted his impressions on the Message Board.  It is presented here with minor editing.) I had the opportunity last week to see projected, for a second time, what remains of the 1925 silent film based on The Magnificent Ambersons. I had previously seen it some 18 months earlier on my first visit to the London meetings of Group 9.5, a club dedicated to the Pathescope format. Some may be aware that excerpts were included on on the Criterion CAV laserdisc of  The Magnificent Ambersons, which was issued in 1986. I was impressed by how much more satisfying the film presentation was than the excerpts on the laserdisc, Tags: the-magnificent-ambersons Posted in Criticism & Research, News, The Magnificent Ambersons | Comments Off on ‘Pampered Youth’ – The other lost ‘Magnificent Ambersons’

Did ‘The Shadow’ influence ‘The War of the Worlds’? Friday, February 24th, 2017 (Editor's note: A veteran New England journalist, Lars Trodson is the author of the eBook About Orson, writer-producer of the award-winning short film The Listener, and editor of  The Block Island Times. He wrote Orson Welles: Scorpion in a Cage  for Wellsnet in July 2015.) Ever since The Mercury Theatre On the Air broadcast its famous version of The War of the Worlds on October 30, 1938, there has been an ongoing debate over who created the idea of using authentic-sounding news bulletins to build up the story’s suspense at the beginning of the show. It's easy to see why credit would want to be taken. It's one of the most famous dramas in radio history, it caused some listeners to panic, and the broadcast and its aftermath have become remarkably durable milestones in pop culture history. It also catapulted Welles into global fame at the age of 23. Tags: war-of-the-worlds Posted in News, Radio shows, War of the Worlds |

Comments Off on Did ‘The Shadow’ influence ‘The War of the Worlds’? ‘It’s All True’ – 75 years after Orson Welles’ ill-fated shoot Monday, February 20th, 2017 Seventy five years ago this month, Orson Welles was dispatched to Brazil to film Carnaval, the wild and lively pre-Lenten celebration in Rio de Janeiro. It proved to be one of the sadder chapters in the late filmmaker's career. Welles was under pressure from RKO to shoot a portion of his third film, the multi-story It's All True, in Brazil. He had been appointed a goodwill ambassador to Latin America by Nelson Rockefeller, coordinator of Inter-American Affairs and a major stockholder in RKO, in November 1941. The OCIAA has been established a year earlier with funds from both the U.S. government and private sector. Welles’ would use Carnaval to tell the story of the samba. Jangadeiros, a segment on the impoverished lives of Brazilian fishermen in Fortaleza, would constitute the second of three chapters.

Conceived by Woodstock City Councilman RB Thompson and graphic designer Michael Stanard, the mural will feature four of Woodstock’s cultural legends: Welles, Dick Tracy creator Chester Gould, the 1993 movie Groundhog Day; and the Woodstock Opera House. The mural will be displayed on the Main Street Pedway. The project will also include a sculpture garden featuring a bronze statue of Welles, as well as an information kiosk. "There has been tremendous enthusiasm for this," Stanard told Wellesnet. "This is going to happen. It is going to happen."

Stanard and designer Mark Costello expect work on the mural to begin this spring or summer after the wall is properly prepped. Noted muralist Mark J. Adamany of Rockford, Illinois, will create the artwork on the wall bordering the walkway adjacent to Classic Cinemas Woodstock Theatre. The Welles sculpture will be created and donated by artist Bobby Joe Scribner of Woodstock. The project's total cost has been estimated at $80,000 with more than $23,000 in funding already in place. Tags: woodstock Posted in News, Woodstock | Comments Off on Orson Welles statue, mural planned in Woodstock, Illinois Criterion releasing ‘Othello,’ 1952 and 1955 versions, on Blu-ray, DVD Wednesday, February 15th, 2017 The Criterion Collection will release Orson Welles' Othello in a fashion guaranteed to delight purists unhappy with the 1992 restoration. The double Blu-ray and DVD sets, which will be released May 23, will include newly restored 4K digital transfers of both the 1952 European and 1955 U.S. versions.

In late 2014, Wellesnet broke the news that Julian Schlossberg, who handled distribution of the Michael Dawson-produced 1992 restoration for the Estate of Orson Welles, had reached a deal on behalf of Beatrice Welles with Criterion. Since then, Wellesnet received reports that Criterion was searching for the best elements in Europe. Started in 1949, Othello was shot over three years in numerous locations. Othello won the Palme d´Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1952, yet it languished through the 1970s and '80s, largely due to a lack of distribution. When Othello was refurbished in 1992, it was praised by critics, despite questions by noted film scholar Jonathan Rosenbaum and others about liberties taken by the restoration team, notably the decision to re-record the music score in stereo.  (The Criterion release is NOT in stereo and there is no indication the 1992 version will be represented in this set). Comments Off on Criterion releasing ‘Othello,’ 1952 and 1955 versions, on Blu-ray, DVD ‘Orson Welles Great Mysteries’ out on DVD in Germany Monday, February 13th, 2017 Orson Welles Great Mysteries has gotten an official DVD release – in Germany. The two-disc set, released on January 27 by Pidax Film Media, features 10 episodes of the British anthology television series, which was hosted by Welles. It retails for €17.99, less than $20. The discs are Region 2 encoded and in the PAL format, which means they will not play in most North American DVD players. (We are unaware of a U.S. home video release in the offing.) Wellesnet cannot report with complete certainty on the set's Dolby audio track.  While Pidax Film Media's website, Amazon Italy and Amazon UK report that the episodes are dubbed in German,  Amazon Germany has (perhaps mistakenly) listed the DVD set as an English language release. The Welles-hosted anthology series – with its John Barry theme –  features performances by Joan Collins, Patrick Macnee, Victor Buono, Jack Cassidy and Dean Stockwell.

None of the episodes were written or directed by Welles. The two-DVD set includes only 10 of the series' 26 episodes, leaving the door open for an additional volume. Posted in News, Television shows | Comments Off on ‘Orson Welles Great Mysteries’ out on DVD in Germany ‘John Wick,’ ‘LEGO Batman’ and ‘The Lady From Shanghai’ Saturday, February 11th, 2017 On the surface, John Wick: Chapter 2 and The LEGO Batman Movie, both opening this weekend, would seem to have little in common with each other, let alone with the work of Orson Welles. But both movies reportedly offer a nod to Welles' 1948 thriller The Lady From Shanghai. Early reviews of both new movies reveal each film features a scene based on The Lady From Shanghai's climactic hall of mirrors shootout between Rita Hayworth and Everett Sloane. In John Wick: Chapter 2, a R-rated action flick with Keanu Reeves, The New Yorker's Richard Brody noted there is a long set piece in an art museum, which is based on the mirror-maze shoot-out.

Critic Al Alexander of More Content Now says the animated, family-friendly The LEGO Batman Movie has the Caped Crusader becoming lost and under fire in a hall of mirrors. Wellesnet veteran Seth Alexander Thévoz discovered a video interview online with the late Kenneth Williams (Very Serious Actor/Elijah) recalling the summer 1955 production at the Duke of York's Theatre in London. The Network interview (see below) took place circa 1978 when Williams was filming the Peter Cook - Dudley Moore comedy The Hound of the Baskervilles. In his autobiography Just Williams, published in 1985,  he gave an overview of Moby Dick– Rehearsed and working with Welles.
