Pedestrian Dies Following Crash in Duluth Mall Area Police say a 72-year-old man was hit by a car near Maple Grove Road and Mall Drive on Saturday. Baihly Warfield December 12, 2016 01:38 PM The Duluth Police Department says a pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in Duluth's mall area on Saturday. Seventy-two-year-old Eugene Lloyd Thompson was struck by a vehicle on Maple Grove Road, near Target, at about 1:10 p.m. Police spokesperson Ron Tinsley said Monday that a preliminary investigation suggests Thompson was crossing the road in the middle of the block rather than at the intersection or designated crosswalk. Thompson died after being taken to a local hospital. Tinsley said there were no indications that the driver of the car, a 75-year-old Duluth man, was impaired or distracted by a cell phone. Police continue to investigate the incident. Maple Grove Road was closed for a time Saturday due to the incident. Updated: December 12, 2016 01:38 PM
