A-Z of UK and Irish CinemasLord Longford, the Labour peer and controversial penal reformer, has died aged 95.Francis Aungier Pakenham, the 7th Earl of Longford, died at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in central London. In a statement, Lady Longford and the rest of the family expressed "deep sadness" and added: "It was a great life and he was a great man."Lord Longford attracted criticism for persistently speaking out year after year for parole for Moors Murderer Myra Hindley. In 1985 he branded a Parole Board decision "barbaric" when it refused to release her after 20 years in jail for at least another five years. He also courted controversy when he published his Pornography Report in 1972.The report, released the same year he was made a Knight of the Garter, challenged the view of the permissive society that pornography did no harm. It earned him the label Lord Porn.Lord Longford married prolific writer Elizabeth Harman in 1931 and they had eight children. The couple were struck by tragedy when their daughter Catherine was killed in a car crash aged 23.Another daughter, Lady Antonia Fraser, went on to become a successful historical biographer.

Prime Minister Tony Blair, who heard of Lord Longford's death while in Mexico, led the tributes to the peer.He said: "He was a great man, a man of passionate integrity and humanity and a great reformer committed to modernising the law while also caring deeply for individuals. I will miss him deeply."The leader of Roman Catholics in England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, the Archbishop of Westminster, paid tribute to Lord Longford's loyalty to his faith. He said: "I remember Lord Longford as a great friend and a man not afraid to be different. He was an outstanding Christian witness who devoted his entire life to the Catholic faith. May he rest in peace."Former Labour MP Tony Benn, who served in Harold Wilson's government with Lord Longford from 1964-68, remembered the peer as a "kindly and thoughtful" man who served the nation for many decades. He said that the controversy over his support for Hindley should not be allowed to overshadow memories of his pre-war opposition to the appeasement of Hitler, his work on the Beveridge reforms which led to the creation of the welfare state and his lengthy service in government.

Mr Benn told PA News: "He had a very long and distinguished career as a Catholic socialist statesman and a minister."His concern for people, and for prisoners in particular, was genuine. He simply did not believe that people should be allowed to rot in jail."Of course, his work with Myra Hindley grabbed all the headlines but there was a lot more to him than that."He was a very kind and thoughtful man. I think he will be remembered as a very respected and well thought of man with a great conscience. He was just a very decent guy."Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust, said Lord Longford was a "remarkable" man who was not afraid to stand up for his beliefs."Lord Longford had a rare belief in humanity and a determination to stand up for people who could not stand up for themselves."Essentially, he refused to see people who had done terrible things as terrible people."Frances Crook, director of the Howard League for Penal Reform, said she would miss Lord Longford both professionally and personally."
