That's Candy Industry Magazine's list of the largest North American confectioners, and Just Born Quality Confections, the Lehigh Valley's largest candy manufacturer and purveyor of the iconic Peeps and Mike and Ikes, hung on to its spot in the top 20 this year, slipping three slots to 19.Just Born of Bethlehem ranked No. 16 in 2014 and 2015. As in many industries, a significant portion of the largest companies in the business are based outside North America.That's evidenced by Just Born's ranking of No. 70 in the magazine's Global 100 for 2016, which was published in January.
Candy Industry magazine, which compiles both lists, listed Just Born's net sales as $231 million, the same as 2015, but higher than the $222 million recorded for 2014. It said the company has two manufacturing facilities and employs a total of 600 workers, totals that haven't changed.The privately held Just Born is known for playing it close to the vest with corporate data, so just how accurate are the size estimates? Not a peep on that subject from Just Born, only this polite statement: "While we are a private company and do not provide factory sales data to anyone compiling ranking lists, it is nevertheless an honor to be on a list among such other great companies," said Matthew Pye, vice president of corporate affairs at Just Born. Candy Industry says on its website that the list relies on estimates that "come from a combination of manufacturer surveys, annual reports, media reports, private and published research, and analyst interviews."Among those that passed Just Born on the North American list this year were New York's -Kind Healthy Snacks, which makes Kind Bars, and Illinois' Hearthside Food Solutions.So the next time you're chomping down on a Kind Bar, thinking it's health food, remember that the company is North America's 10th largest candy company.
Oh, and that Clif Bar? It's No. 7, from California's Clif Bar & Co.For some added perspective, Tootsie Roll of Illinois and Lindt North America of Missouri are bigger than Just Born, while jelly bean maker Jelly Belly of California and Bazooka Candy Brands of New York, known for its bubble gum, are smaller, according to Candy Industry magazine.Just Born is part of a sizable contingent of confectioners on the list that are in Pennsylvania, including Hershey's, which ranked No. 3 behind Mondelez, of Illinois and has a distribution facility in Tatamy, and Mars, based in Virginia.Pennsylvania's top economic development official dished up some sugary praise for the industry and its role in the state's economy."From product manufacturing, to market distribution, to international export, Pennsylvania is the home base for many confectionary companies' operations. This industry fosters a variety of stable employment opportunities and contributes greatly to the economic well-being of the commonwealth," said Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Davin.
