The racially-charged horror film achieved the incredible this past weekend, when it secured an amazing 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. out of 135 reviewers so far, not a single one disliked the film. That positive reception has no doubt made its way to the audiences, who came out in droves to see the film, securing over $30 million in its opening weekend. This is especially impressive, given that the film was made on a budget of $4.5 million. If the positive word of mouth continues, it’s possible this film will have some real staying power in the weeks to come.The LEGO Batman Movie, while pushed down to second this week, still managed to make $19 million in its third weekend. While the film continues to hold up at the box office, its declining performance is a bit disheartening, as it’s only made north of $220 million worldwide so far. It’s still a success, by all standards, but it doesn’t look like it’ll approach anywhere near the worldwide gross of The LEGO Movie, which ended its theatrical run at $469 million.
Despite its strong critical reception, audiences haven’t responded as well as the studio had expected. Hopefully this won’t affect the potential future prospects of future LEGO Movies.
