First-week sales were so strong that the animated comedy, which grossed more than $256 million in U.S. theaters alone, outsold its nearest competitor, Universal Studios’ “,” by a margin of 13 to 1. Of course, “Lone Survivor,” a $125 million-grossing actioner with Mark Wahlberg as a Navy Seal who with his team sets out to capture a notorious Taliban leader, has been in stores three weeks. So its distant-No. 2 finish for the week ending June 22 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert Sales chart – which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined – and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart is not unexpected. Universal’s “Non-Stop,” a thriller with Liam Neeson as an air marshal aboard a threatened transatlantic flight, slipped to No. 3 on First Alert after bowing at No. 2 the previous week. The No. 4 spot on First Alert went to a new release from 20th Century Fox, “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” a comedy with Ralph Fiennes as a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel that earned $58.4 million in U.S. theaters.

Rounding out the top five on the overall disc sales chart was “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” from Paramount, which debuted at No. 3 the previous week but in terms of total unit sold was No. 1 (thanks to a two-pack, exclusive to Walmart, that VideoScan counted separately). The Blu-ray Disc chart saw the No. 3 spot going to “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” followed by “Jack Ryan” at No. 4 and “Non-Stop” at No. 5. Excitement about the new “Transformers: Age of Extinction” movie, which opens theatrically June 27, sent all three previous installments in the sci-fi franchise back into the First Alert top 20: “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” at No. 11, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” at No. 15 and the 2007 original at No. 16. On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “3 Days to Kill,” from 20th Century Fox, was No. 1 now that its 28-day holdback from key rental outlets Netflix and Redbox is over. “Jack Ryan,” the previous week’s top renter, slipped to No. 2 after bowing at No. 1 the previous week.

“Joe,” from Lionsgate, debuted at No. 3. The drama, with Nicolas Cage, earned less than $400,000 in a limited theatrical release. (Joe also debuted at No. 9 on the First Alert sales chart and No. 16 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.) Rounding out the top five are two comedies from Universal Studios: “Ride Along,” which held steady at No. 4, and the newly released “Walk of Shame,” another limited theatrical release, about a reporter (Elizabeth Banks) who gets stranded in a bad part of Los Angeles after a one-night stand on the eve of a very important job interview. Thomas K. Arnold is editorial director of Home Media Magazine. Top 20 Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart for week of 6/22/2014: 1. The LEGO Movie (new) 4. The Grand Budapest Hotel (new) 5. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit 8. How to Train Your Dragon 10. Son of God 11. Transformers: Dark of the Moon 12. House of Cards: The Complete Second Season (new) 13. The Monuments Men
