Unfortunately, its sequel - which was initially due to be released May 2018 - has been pushed back to February 2019, almost five years since the first bowed into cinemas. Deadline reports that The Lego Movie 2 (aptly titled The Lego Movie Sequel) is just one of a numerous number of release dates that Warner Bros has shifted. The film will be directed by comedy writer Rob Schrab in his directorial debut. He replaces Phil Lord and Chris Miller who'll instead be steering the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars prequel with Alden Ehrenreich. Elsewhere, while new Ben Affleck Live by Night has excitingly been brought forward from October to January 2017.
Spin-off The Lego Batman Movie is moving ahead as planned - it'll be released 10 February 2017. Directed by Chris McKay - who worked as an animation co-director on the original alongside Lord and Miller - the film will feature all the characters you'd associate with the world of Gotham. Robin (Michael Cera), Batgirl (Rosario Dawson) and Bruce Wayne's trusty butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Ralph Fiennes) will all appear, with Zach Galifianakis lending his voice to The Joker.Latest update: The LEGO Movie Sequel delayed. The LEGO Movie was an unexpected smash hit. It raked in over $450 million worldwide from a production budget of just $60 million, nabbed an Oscar nomination for Best Song (although the Academy did somehow neglect to give it the nod in the Animation category) and inspired enough enthusiasm from Warner Bros. that the studio promptly green-lit four more LEGO-themed cinematic releases. Here’s when you can expect those four LEGO movies in the UK… You don’t need us to tell you that Will Arnett’s Batman was the standout character from The LEGO Movie.
From his catchy song lyrics like “Darkness! No parents!” to his undeniable skills with a Batarang, this Batman Minifig was far more than the hero we deserved. Arnett will lend his voice to the character once more in this spin-off movie. He’ll be joined by a stellar supporting cast consisting of Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Zach Galifianakis as The Joker and Michael Cera as Robin. Mariah Carey will also appear, as the Mayor of Gotham. This one’s not too far off, so hopefully we’ll have a trailer to share with you soon. When we get the exact UK date, we’ll be sure to update this article. If you’re unfamiliar, Ninjago is a line of Ninja-themed products that LEGO has been producing since 2011.
Martial artist Minifigs are pitted against dragons, ghosts and an array of other evil opponents (including evil ninjas, of course). So far, the cast hasn’t been announced for the Ninjago movie, but we know that Charlie Bean – who’s directed the Tron: Uprising animated series and worked in the art department on several animated giants – is set to call the shots. Further reading: The 12 cinematic universes currently in development Proving that it’s still possible for a major studio to take their time with a sequel to a major blockbuster, we won’t get the imaginatively titled The LEGO Movie Sequel until almost five years after the original came out. It was meant to be a four year gap, but this brick-based sequel recently got pushed back. Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s schedules are too jam packed with Star Wars, superheroes and TV projects to allow them to direct The LEGO Movie Sequel (that job will go to Rob Schrab, who has previously helmed episodes of Community and The Mindy Project), but they are writing the script.
We’d expect Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett and many more voices from the first LEGO Movie to return, potentially to be joined by some scary Duplo toys from Finn’s sister’s collection. The UK date isn’t announced yet, but this one will land in US cinemas on 8th February 2019. We don’t know the plot of this one, but we do know that it’s intended for a 24th May 2019 release (we’ll add the UK date when it’s announced). That date could change, though, now that The LEGO Movie Sequel has been pushed back. Jason Segel (who proved his possibly-relevant puppeteering skills during Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and has voiced an animated character before in Despicable Me) and Drew Pearce (who did great writing work on Iron Man 3, and directed the tie-in short All Hail The King) are attached to co-direct and write The Billion Brick Race.
Will it be a race in a driving sense, or a race to build something? We don’t know, but we have heard that the pitch from Pearce was apparently enough to ‘excite’ Warner Bros. Domestically it even placed fifth overall for the year, behind huge franchise films like The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Yet the film also won numerous awards, including an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for “Everything Is Awesome.”
So a sequel was already all but assured when it was announced for 2017, but then two spinoff films later took its place on the schedule. The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie are currently scheduled for next year, and they were to be followed by the long-awaited The Lego Movie 2 in 2018 – yet that last part has changed. Deadline is reporting that The Lego Movie 2 is moving yet again to February 8th, 2019. There’s no word yet on why the sequel has been moved once more, but in an interesting tidbit it’ll now release almost five years to the day of the original. And the news comes with Warner Bros also changing the release dates for disaster film Geostorm, comedy Bastards and the Ben Affleck-directed Live By Night. While the schedule move for The Lego Movie 2 is surprising, it’s also entirely understandable. Lord and Miller are writing the sequel, but the two have also been very busy as of late penning Sony’s animated Spider-Man film and a treatment for Warner Bros’ film The Flash.
