Living near freeways makes people sick. You are capable of AMAZING THINGS. ~ The Lego MovieAt its sporadic best, the crazy velocity and wisenheimer appeal of "The Lego Batman Movie" reminds you of what made "The Lego Movie" such a nice surprise three years ago. It was my favorite comedy of 2014, even without that insidiously satiric theme song "Everything is Awesome!"Director Chris McKay's spinoff, however, is more about expectations fulfilled than new surprises, nicely sprung. Basically a conventional superhero action movie with a constant stream of sideline heckling, "The Lego Batman Movie" goes where various franchises housed at various studios have gone before. Just as Iron Man (the target of a running gag here) fell into a narcissistic pool of self-interest and celebrity indulgence in his second movie, the lil' plastic Batman taking center stage is a raging egomaniac, all abs and no heart.

He has buried the pain of his parents' murder with a mountain of cool toys and weapons. Amusingly Bruce Wayne/Batman, voiced as he was in a choice supporting role in "The Lego Movie" by Will Arnett, isn't exactly the master of his cavernous domain; he proves somewhat clueless when it comes to working a DVR remote or programming a microwave oven. Only his faithful butler, Alfred, given just the right empathetic tones by Ralph Fiennes, knows what Bruce needs: a surrogate family, so he's not stuck on the couch watching "Jerry Maguire" another lonely night.MOST READ ENTERTAINMENT NEWS THIS HOUR Toward this end, Bruce casually adopts an orphan, Dick Grayson (Michael Cera, delightfully naive) and ventures outside his loner-vigilante sphere to join forces with Gotham City police Commissioner Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson, better than her limited material). Batman's chief nemesis remains, inevitably, the needy, whiny, malevolent Joker (Zach Galifianakis). But as Batman says, "I like to fight around," and the screenplay credited to five writers arranges for one onslaught after another."

The Lego Movie" benefited from its sweet-natured protagonist, Emmet, surrounded by a shrewdly judged degree of mayhem. "The Lego Batman Movie" offers more mayhem and less funny. It takes a cheerfully cynical buckshot approach to pop culture spoofing on the run, roping in Superman (Channing Tatum, voice), Harley Quinn (Jenny Slate), references to Batman's past (all the way back to the 1966 Adam West/Burt Ward feature, based on the TV series). Dozens of celeb voice cameos spice the action, from Conan O'Brien as The Riddler to Mariah Carey as the Gotham mayor. The value of teamwork; the importance of feelings; the peculiar, mesmerizing charm of Lego flames and fireballs, digitally animated: These are among the lessons imparted by "The Lego Batman Movie." I enjoyed it well enough.Michael Phillips is a Tribune critic. Michael Cera, Ralph Fiennes, Zach Galifianakis, Jenny Slate, Rosario Dawson, Mariah Carey and Billy Dee Williams join Will Arnett's Lego Batman world. From the same team that worked on The Lego Movie comes The Lego Batman Movie, an animated adventure with Batman as the leading superhero. Will Arnett reprises his role as the superhero, portrayed here as a stubborn vigilante refusing to have any help. In the new movie, Batman is faced with the challenge of taking down Gotham City’s biggest threat, the Joker (Zach Galifianakis). Desperate to defeat the colorful culprit, Batman must learn to sacrifice his pride and work with others to keep Gotham City safe. The new group of characters ready to battle alongside Batman includes Ralph Fiennes’ loyal Alfred Pennyworth, Rosario Dawson’s brave Batgirl and Michael Cera’s sidekick Robin. Find out more about the performers below. Will Arnett reprises his role from The Lego Movie as the voice of the film’s leading character, Batman/Bruce Wayne.

While in the first film, Batman added a comic relief and helped Emmet (Chris Pratt) take down evil tyrant Lord Business (Will Ferrell), this time around Batman has his own big-screen adventure. Batman returns to save Gotham City from being taken over by the Joker (Zach Galifianakis). Arnett also voiced characters in Despicable Me and Ratatouille. Jenny Slate voices the Joker’s confidant, the mischievous Harley Quinn. It's not her first time voicing a role. She also is Tammy on the TV series Bob’s Burgers and had voice roles in The Secret Life of Pets (as the voice of Gidget) and Zootopia (as the voice of Bellwether). Slate will also voice a role in Despicable Me 3, set for release in June. Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes voices the character Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s childhood legal guardian and butler in the DC Comics and action films. Never failing to provide comical relief with his somewhat sarcastic attitude, Pennyworth guides Bruce as he carries out his superhero duties.

Fiennes recently voiced a character in Kubo and the Two Strings. Barbara Gordon, the daughter of police commissioner James Gordon and who later becomes fellow crime fighter Batgirl, is voiced by Rosario Dawson. Dawson next stars as Claire Temple in the Netflix original series The Defenders, premiering later this year. Zach Galifianakis will voice Batman’s best-known foe, the Joker. In the film, the Joker attempts to take over Gotham City, but not without facing Batman first. The Hangover actor will next star in the films Tulip Fever and A Wrinkle in Time. Michael Cera voices Robin, the yang to Batman/Bruce’s yin. The Juno also has signed on to appear in Twin Peaks later  this year, as well as star alongside Rob Lowe and Salma Hayek in How to Be a Latin Lover, set for an April release. Five-time Grammy winner Mariah Carey voices Mayor McCaskill. In previous Batman adaptations, the mayor was male (Nestor Carbonell had the role in in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises).
