First lesson

Diagnostic tests

• Begin with getting-to-know-you activity (possibly class profiles)
• Students into pairs / small groups (depending on numbers – one group could take each section?) – prepare a presentation:
• Our company
• What does the company do?
• Who are their clients?
• What does your department do?
• The product
• What does the company make?
• How do they work?
• Our roles
• What does your job involve? What are your main responsibilities?
• Who do you speak to at work? Spoken? In writing?
• Which aspects of your work do you need to do in English?
• What is the future of your role / company, in your opinion?
• Anything else that you want to mention?
• These presentations can serve as a lead in to a more detailed needs analysis – teacher should take notes during the presentation, especially during the last section

Alternative – Depending on the length of the lessons, product descriptions could be saved until the next lesson, either done as presentations, or creating displays.

The teacher should note functional areas that the students need in order to talk about the products.
