Little Buffalo State Park, set in the south-central Pennsylvania borough of Newport, lies along the cool waters of Little Buffalo Creek, offering visitors the chance to experience nature and take part in outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing and camping. Former inhabitants of the area include Iroquois tribe members and, according to local tradition, the namesake buffalo. Today, visitors are more likely to glimpse white-tailed deer, beavers, mink, turkeys, or a variety of waterfowl. Amenities Little Buffalo State Park (dcnr.state.pa.us) provides activities for the entire family, from seasonal swimming in the park's almost half-acre pool -- featuring two water slides and a spray ground -- to fishing for largemouth bass, catfish and panfish on 88-acre Holman Lake. Private boats are allowed on the lake, or park-goers can rent canoes, rowboats and pedal boats from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the same period that the pool is open. Swimming is not allowed in Holman Lake. Other park amenities include two large picnic areas, both with horseshoe pits, playgrounds and sheltered pavilions.
Trails Hikers have 8 miles of trails from which to choose at Little Buffalo State Park, ranging from the easy, quarter-mile Blue Ball Trail, which winds near the site of the old Blue Ball Tavern and a historic farmhouse, to the more difficult Middle Ridge Trail, a 2.5-mile path with several steep climbs. The 1.2-mile Exercise Trail features 18 exercise stations for activities such as pull-ups and sit-ups. In addition, a year-round, 10-kilometer Volksmarch walk combines several trails marked by white arrows. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes because of rocky footing in some places. Winter Activities Visitors can't swim or canoe in colder weather, but Little Buffalo State Park offers other activities during winter. All of the park's hiking trails and service roads are open for cross-country skiing, including a 2.5-mile loop that starts on the Little Buffalo Creek Trail. Other wintertime activities include ice fishing and ice skating on Holman Lake. Heated restrooms are provided at the 2-acre ice skating arena.
Ice thickness is monitored in the skating area, but winter anglers should carry safety equipment and make sure the ice is at least 4 inches thick. Campground and Cabins Visitors who want to stay overnight or longer at Little Buffalo State Park have their choice of 40 campsites, five camping cottages and a three-bedroom modern cabin. The campground, open from mid-April to mid-October, includes sites with electric and water hookups, as well as community restrooms and showers. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring. The cottages sleep five and have electric heat and lighting, a table and chairs. The cabin sleeps 12 and features air conditioning, heat, full kitchen with refrigerator, microwave oven, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, though guests must provide linens and cookware. Pets are permitted in the campground, but not in the cottages or cabin.
