But for Ashleigh Swan, a 26-year-old mother from Newcastle, losing her job as a part-time shop assistant last year gave her the impetus to start her own business. “At first I was in a complete panic because without my salary we were £400 worse off a month. I knew I had to find a way to save money instantly,” she said.

Already an accomplished bargain hunter, Mrs Swan began researching discount codes and soon realised she could reduce her family of five’s monthly outgoings by up to £300. Mrs Swan had already begun sharing her successes through a public Facebook page, but it wasn’t until November 2013, by which point she had found another job, that she realised the site had real business potential. So she turned her hobby into a full-time profession and Ashleigh Money Saver was born. She has now quadrupled her previous salary thanks to the revenue generated by the advertising on her website. Ashleighmoneysaver.co.uk has attracted more than a million “hits”, while the Facebook page has almost 185,000 “likes”, 30,000 of which were acquired in the week leading up to Black Friday, when Mrs Swan posted constant updates on the best deals as well as instructions on how to avoid the online queues. With as many as 40 Facebook posts on any given day, Mrs Swan’s followers can expect the latest information on everything from “flash sales” to how to buy one of Disney’s coveted Frozen dolls at a reduced price.

But Mrs Swan’s biggest selling point is that she reports on price glitches, which have included a 1p dining room table from Argos and a £5 money off voucher for Asda which, when used online, registered as £50. Mrs Swan said the bigger stores would sometimes even construct deliberately a price glitch to drive traffic to their sites and get some free advertising. >> price glitch reduces all items to £34.99 >> Don't miss: Do retailers have to honour pricing mistakes? Ashleigh Swan’s exclusive tips for saving money this Christmas 1. Sign up to the free Ashleigh Money Saver text service, which alerts you to price glitches as soon as they happen. 2. Were you born in December? If so, there are plenty of companies offering freebies on your birthday, from a complimentary main course and bottle of prosecco at Italian restaurant chain Zizzi to a £10 voucher to spend at Paperchase. 3. Double up on offers – you will often be able to combine subscriber email offers (from Boots, Tesco, The Body Shop etc) with online voucher codes to get a bigger discount.

4. When shopping in a store, haggle – nicely. Most high street retailers have the ability to offer 10pc off. 5. Seen something on eBay? to ensure you get your item for the best possible price – just enter the maximum you are prepared to pay and it will place the lowest bid needed to win a fraction of a second before the auction ends. You can also use the site to search for eBay items that have been misspelt, allowing you to find hidden bargains. 6. Register your debit card with a site such as TopCashback.co.uk and earn money back when you shop at more than 4,200 retailers. 7. Set up the “1‑Click Ordering” service on Amazon. It saves you time by allowing you to check out and pay instantly, therefore increasing your chances of snagging one of Amazon’s “Lightning Deals” before they run out (often a matter of minutes). 8. Take advantage of companies that price match, such as John Lewis. Toys R Us also provides a price match service, which is unusual for toy retailers. 9. Renegotiate your satellite TV and internet packages (especially if you are coming to the end of a contract) by saying you have seen a better deal elsewhere.

Your supplier will often call your bluff and let you cancel, but hold your nerve – your service won’t end for a month anyway, and in Ms Swan’s experience the company will get back in contact within a couple of days to offer a better deal. 10. Avoid buying bargain items in bulk. There is a temptation to buy more than you need, and to be wasteful because the product was so cheap to begin with. 11. Never pay full price. If you can’t find any valid offer codes online, try calling the company directly to see if it has any special offers. If not, it will often offer free delivery, especially if you are a new customer. 12. If you think you’ve been short-changed, don’t hesitate to complain. Most companies will offer some sort of compensation, but if you’ve exhausted the normal customer service route, Ms Swan has chief executives’ email addresses on her website so you can take your complaint to the next level. 13. When shopping in the sales, set yourself a budget and stick to it.
