If you live in a small home and still love to entertain, you know that hosting dinner parties requires a bit of space planning. Do you borrow a few extra chairs? Haul out a card table from your storage unit? Set up a few cushions on the floor? If you had Orla Reynolds' brilliant shelf, you'd have two tables and four dining chairs conveniently at the ready. Can you spot them? Orla Reynolds' As If From Nowhere shelf design is so smart. The functioning bookcase hides two tables and four chairs that easily slide out when you need them.

Reynolds is a former ballerina, and her design (which is "for small living spaces or for those who wish to cater to the unexpected guest") was inspired in part by her previous work on the stage: Reynolds is a recent grad of the Dublin Institute of Technology, so this design is just a prototype. But man, would we love to see this come to market. The white bookcase comprises independent units of two or four squares, each holding a chair or table in its sides. They easily pull out from the bookcase when needed and the two purple tables can be placed together to form a larger dining table.

Former ballet dancer Reynolds, who has just graduated from the Dublin Institute of Technology in Ireland, wanted the movement from bookcase to dining table to reflect a scene change at the theatre. See more bookcases on on Dezeen » Here's more from Orla Reynolds: As if from nowhere… is an independently functioning bookcase which houses four dining chairs and two tables that when placed together form a dining table. It is intended for small living spaces or for those who wish to cater to the unexpected guest. I began my exploration by focusing on dance. I was a ballet dancer, having studied ballet from the age of four. I wanted to focus on the strength of a ballerina, the lightweight and lightsomeness of a ballerina, the beautiful streamlined silhouette they create. Through initial research it seemed as if the pieces would become sculptural, rather than the multi-functional pieces I love to design. I began to think about the theatre stage. I thought about how a production is brought together for the audience;

how the audience becomes engaged. I then began to think about the home as a stage; and how our lives play out within these four walls. The walls appeared to be the most wasted space, especially in small living spaces such as apartment living. Through concept development, and model making, I created As if from nowhere… As if from nowhere… is an independently functioning bookcase, that houses four dining chairs, and two tables, that when united create a dining table. The movement from bookcase to dining is like a scene change. It transforms the space like props on a stage. The dancers can be seen in the chairs and tables. These are made of such strong material that there is an expectation that they are heavy. But they are lightweight. They are streamlined creating an elegant silhouette. I tried to sustain a vision. The bookcase is the nucleus of this production. It houses everything, awaiting the performance. The four chairs are like the four swans in Tchaikovsky’s, Swan Lake.

The tables are the corps de ballet bringing the production together. Furthermore the bookcase works independently itself, dressing the home. Chair: Mild steel and birch plywood. Secret table and chairs hide in shelves.Hidden Furniture: As If From Nowhere Hidden Furniture is a new idea by Orla Reynolds where brightly colored chairs and tables are hidden between the shelves of a bookcase. This Hidden Furniture is good for space-saving and the whole dining set fits tiny apartments perfectly. The white bookcase is composed of 2-4 squares that hold a chair or table for each square. The chairs and tables can be easily pulled out of the bookcase and the two purple tables can be combined to form a large dining table. And just like how easy they can be pulled out, they can also be easily put back.

The bookcase that holds the tables and chairs are functional just like an ordinary bookcase. Its just that it holds and hides the tables and chairs. The bookcase can be used in many ways other than a bookcase alone. It can be sat on and you can place decorations on top of it.Follow us for more similar stories: Get notified when products come to our store:Starting from the idea of having more room within crowded spaces, this new space-saving solution from designer Orla Reynolds brings functional modern design in the spotlight again. Hinting towards its usefulness, the “As if from nowhere…” furniture concept marries a bookcase, four dining chairs and two tables in a one-of-a-kind design. Storing your dining table and chairs in the bookcase would have sounded weird a few years back, but today we’re used to seeing smart home solutions for having more space, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still be surprised. Accentuating the bookcase’s borders with their vivid colors, the easily removable furniture items composing a dining collection give the whole concept a fun twist.
