Please wait 8 secondsEva Mitchell February 16th, 2017 Posted In: News, Press Release DES MOINES – In response to the passing of Republican-sponsored,  SF213 and HF291, bills that gut a Chapter 20 law that has worked well for forty years to the benefit of working men and women in Iowa, IDP Chair, Derek Eadon issued the following statement: “This assault on worker’s rights is an attack on thousands of Iowa families. This bill does nothing to create jobs in Iowa, and it will only make it more difficult for Iowans to get ahead in the future. Bills targeting collective bargaining will adversely affect our children’s education, result in layoffs, compromise the safety of public employees and drive down wages across the state.

The fact that Democratic lawmakers are showing up and pushing back against this bill highlights the fact that we are the only party standing up for the working men and women of Iowa. We are a party that believes hard work should be rewarded and that we should keep promises to workers who have made our state what it is today. Eva Mitchell February 16th, 2017 Posted In: News, Press Release DES MOINES – Today, in Iowa and across the nation, businesses will close and thousands will march in support of a Day Without Immigrants. In response to this day of action that recognizes the significance of immigrants’ valuable contributions to our country, Iowa Democratic Party Latino/a Caucus Chair, Brenda Phongsavanh issued the following statement: “Iowa has a rich history of welcoming immigrants and refugees fleeing from poverty and life-threatening situations. The Latino/a Caucus stands in solidarity with protesters, students and activists and their strike to highlight the significant contributions of immigrants to our a society.

Immigrants are the foundation of our nation’s history. American culture is an amalgamation of diverse ethnicities and global influences. We should celebrate that culture and embrace everyone coming to our country in search of a better life. Eva Mitchell February 8th, 2017 Posted In: News, Press Release DES MOINES – Yesterday, Iowa House Republicans passed a bill along party lines that would prohibit charts and graphs from being used during debate. Republicans claim the bill was intended to preserve the decorum of the body. It appears, however, at least one Iowa Republican needs a refresher course on decorum and treating his constituents with respect and decency. Iowa Democratic Party Stonewall Caucus Chair, Devin Kelly issued the following statement today in response to State Rep. Ralph Watts’ use of an anti-gay slur at a Dallas County forum this past weekend : “At a Dallas County legislative forum on Saturday, state representative Ralph Watts referred to one of his constituents and former opponent by a used to denigrate and demean male homosexuals.

This inflammatory term has no place in society, let alone a state legislative forum. Rep. Watts owes the entire LGBTQ+ community an apology for his callous and offensive remarks. We cannot allow this type of behavior to become normalized and accepted as commonplace. Eva Mitchell February 7th, 2017 Posted In: News, Press Release DES MOINES – Iowa Democratic Party Chair, Derek Eadon, issued the following statement today in response to the introduction of HSB84, the bill that strips Iowa workers of the right to negotiate their wages & benefits with the State: “This bill is an overreach of power. The new big brother-style Republican government in Iowa has decided that their priority is not creating jobs, but is instead putting more people under the thumb of government bureaucracy. First it was women, with the bill to defund Planned Parenthood. Then it was students with the underfunded public school budget. Now it’s working people, and Republicans will certainly pass this bill too.
