In this section we’re reviewing some of the newest hunting blinds on the market. As well as some killer seating options,  fantastic archery equipment and high tech navigation devices to keep you on the right track. New for 2014, the Nova Ladder Stand from Big Game Treestands is set up for both bow and rifle hunting with an adjustable rest that moves out of the way (or completely detaches) for bow hunters. I have to say, I’m a huge fan of tree stands. Up in the air high above the floor, ladder stands give you the best view of incoming and far away targets. I do most of my early season bow hunting from tree stands and it’s for sure my favorite type of hunting. That being said I’m kind of particular about my gear when I’m that high up.

I need equipment that’s built to last and that I can trust. With Big Game Treestands I know exactly what I’m getting. Their stands are quality built and have excessively strong welds. And the Nova is no exception. When testing this treestand I found it to be comfortable and sturdy. Setup took about 1 hour and requires minimal tools. As far as erection and securing it to a tree goes that was rather easy too. Make sure you have at least two people to attempt this, and a sturdy tree. Overall, we really enjoyed this treestand, the adjustable rest is great for rifle season and the adjustable foot rest is also a nice touch. But what we really feel in love with was the built-in cup holder… yes I said it, this ladderstand comes equipped with a built-in cup holder. Which means your coffee or favorite beverage is never far away! When it comes to ground blinds, i’m quite particular. As a big man, I need space. I like my ground blinds with a little extra elbow room when possible – at least enough wiggle room to hunt both bow and rifle seasons.

In the past most ground blinds I’ve owned have only been good for rifle season because they simply don’t provide enough space for me to fully draw my compound bow. Well, this season I’ll be hunting from a BlackOut x300 and the amount of space will not be an issue I can assure you! With 90 inches of clearance from front to back and side to side this ground blind is an absolute beast. It’s footprint is huge and it’s capable of comfortably hunting two people, which is great for taking your kids out or hunting with your best buddy. Some key features you should really pay attention to besides it’s massive overall size are the large quick access door, which make entry/exit easy even with gear. We also dig the outer loops that make brushing the blind in really easy. PRO TIP: use pine bows to brush-in your blind if possible. Pine lasts longer than most other limbs. We’ve been looking for the perfect hunting seat for quite a while now. There are a ton to choose from, but I think we’ve narrowed it down finally.

What we have here is the ultimate seat for rifle hunters in the field. The Benchmaster Sniper Seat 360 is a four leg swivel chair that has a built-in fully adjustable mono-pod. No more resting your gun on the window of your blind or up against a tree, with the Sniper Seat you can pull off the perfect shot without hardly having to move a muscle. And since the chair swivels 360 degrees you can monitor your surroundings in every direction. With a piece of equipment like this there’s a few criteria that really make or break it’s functionality. First, is it comfy? We’re happy to report this chair is quite comfy. With adjustable legs and an adjustable foam seat you can easily hunt from this chair for hours and hours. Next, is it easy to transport to your hunting spot? Well, with a backpack style harness it’s pretty easy to lug this 25 lbs seat anywhere you want to go. And finally, is it quite? This was our biggest concern and thankfully the swivle system Benchmark put into this seat is silent!

We’re talking no squeaks, creeks or pops. Overall, this is a great hunting seat. If you’re a rifle hunter this could be your new best friend. Alternativly the Sniper Seat 360’s mono-pod also can be detached for bow hunting. In my future I see a lot of whitetail hunts seated in this bad boy! Bring a comfortable seat along wherever your hunt leads you with the RedHead Self-Supporting Ground Hunting Seat. Internal fiberglass stay bars give this lightweight seat’s foam-padded seat and back structure for easier use. Adjustable Duraflex buckle straps give you control over the seat’s recline angle support. Built to last with a durable, water-resistant, camo polyester shell. Built-in carry handle with wrap makes it simple and easy to bring the seat with you. If you’re the type of hunter that likes to setup in a new location every time you head out into the woods this chair is perfect for you. It’s durable, rather comfy and ultra portable. A great piece of gear to keep in your kit.

Featuring the Rage’s new revolutionary KORE technology, this 100 grain broadhead is built from durable stainless steel, and laced with with CNC-machined cavities designed to inflict massive damage at impact along with its 6 independent cutting surfaces and 1.6″ cutting width. The new KORE Broadhead from Rage utilizes a shock collar ensures proper blade retention, and the compact ferrule for ensures optimum weight distribution. I’ve been shooting Rage Broadheads for years now and they never let me down. These new KORE Broadheads are  more of the same. They fly true and inflict some serous damage. If you’re checking out new broadheads this season – don’t pass up the KORE. Between you and your kill is a sight, rest, arrow, string, anchor point and your release. Unless you’re a finger shooter, your release is one of the most crucial pieces of gear required to pull off the perfect shot. When we’re looking for the perfect release we’re looking for comfort, durability, silent buckling, adjustability and a trigger that releases like butter.

Say hello to the The Max Edge Buckle Black Foldback Release! Designed with a smaller than dime sized head, this release is completely bad-ass. And even though it has been scaled back, it retains the functionality and benefits you expect from Tru-Fire. The Max Edge Buckle Black Foldback Release utilizes a linear motion bearing which delivers an extremely smooth trigger feel. Pull the trigger back to open the jaws, and let up on the trigger to close the jaws. Also there is a lockdown set screw for your length adjustment. Once you have the correct length just simply tighten the set screw and the length will be locked in place. This small product innovation is a perfect example of how Tru-Fire continues to engineer products that surpass our expectations. Made in the USA from 100% recycled material, Big Green Targets are designed with maximum durability, easy arrow removal and affordability in-mind. For this article we tested their Magnum Pro Target which is outfitted with two sides – one with a seriously awesome deer vitals graphic and the other with classic archery targets.

Throughout testing we put more than 1000 arrows into our demo target and it held up great – leading us to think it will hold up for many seasons of heavy practice. The other very impressive feature this target has is its easy arrow removal. I like to practice a lot and one of the most annoying things I encounter is stuck arrows in a target. I’d rather spend my time shooting than wrestling a target to get my arrows back. With this target we never experience serious sticking of arrows. Even with very hot bows topping 350 FPS we were able to extricate target arrows with ease. Equipped with a housing that is rugged, waterproof and fully submersible, the Magellan 350H GPS is designed to be simple and give hunters access to the features they need quickly. A few key features we absolutely feel in love with during our time spent testing this GPS were its ergonomic housing, 18 hour battery life (on 2 AA’s), its very easy to read screen, the simple to navigate user interface and its ability to mark waypoints on a map with icons for blinds, prey, bedding areas and a whole lot more.

This GPS is great for hunters accessing new territory or heading out on trips into unknown areas. We found the user interface to be extremely easy to navigate – a big improvement over GPS units we’ve tested in the past. If you’re the kind of hunter who loves to explore, this GPS is an incredible tool. PRO TIP: while this unit does boast an 18 hours batter life, it is smart to keep an extra set of batteries in your pack in case they decide to die on you in the middle of nowhere.
