When we arrived a few days after Christmas, the expansive lobby was filled with families relaxing in the many seating groups of leather club chairs before a visit to Hersheypark’s Christmas Candylane and Sweet Lights. The resort’s abundant holiday decorations, including the giant Christmas tree decorated in Hershey candy, combined with the massive four-sided stone fireplace that is the lobby’s centerpiece, created a festive atmosphere and set the tone for family fun. In the evenings the lobby bar was filled with people sampling one of the hotel’s many varieties of chocolate martinis. When we stopped by the activity desk, we took a look at the schedule of family activities, which included bingo, games, crafts, animal encounters, and even visits from the Hershey “characters” — yes there is a giant Reese’s guy. We had a pretty busy schedule seeing some of the other attractions around the Hershey / Harrisburg region, but it was good to know that there was plenty to do to keep families busy.

The Hershey Lodge also offers an indoor pool, game room, and they had a ballroom set up with special events during the vacation week. If you visit during the warmer months, the resort also offers an outdoor pool, mini golf course, tennis courts, shuffleboard court, playground and basketball court. Upstairs the sweetness continued with Hershey Kisses on our pillows, chocolate-infused bath amenities, and hidden kisses everywhere. Just like finding hidden Mickey ears at Disney, we found Kisses in the bedding, wallpaper, and even the soap. We stayed in the conveniently located Kisses tower, a short elevator ride down to the lobby and resort restaurants. The resorts 665 rooms and suites are spread out across the main tower and various wings named after different Hershey products. I would recommend staying in the tower versus the wings, which have more of a motel design with external entrances. I’d also recommend skipping the valet parking to avoid the nightly fee. Even though you will need to park far from the main entrance, you can enter from many exterior doors and take a short cut to your room.

In our room we enjoyed the complimentary WiFi and the soft bedding on our two queen beds, with plenty of room for the three of us. The room was well-appointed and all the special chocolatey touches made it feel special. Maybe it is all those Kisses hiding in the sheets, artwork, and wallpaper; or maybe it is the kids deliriously hyped up on chocolate roaming the halls; but the Hershey Lodge is clearly a place for family fun and not your standard chain hotel. We haven’t stayed in a family-oriented hotel like this in a long time, and have never stayed “on-property” by a theme park, so there were times when the swarms of kids felt a bit overwhelming but I think if you were traveling with a group or extended family this hotel is a great choice. Also families with younger kids will feel completely at ease and not have to worry about shushing their kids or feeling out-of-place. While the Hershey Lodge isn’t cheap (is any theme-park related resort?), it does offer quite a few amenities in addition to the ones above.

They provide free shuttle service to Hersheypark and Hershey’s Chocolate World, as well as free tickets to either The Hershey Story and Hershey Gardens. And if you don’t want to leave the resort, you really don’t have to. There are plenty of dining options including the Coffee Beanery coffee shop and cafe, Bear’s Den hockey-themed sports bar and family restaurant, family-friendly Lebbie Lebkicher’s — a Hershey breakfast tradition, the small and sleek Hershey Grill and the lodge-inspired Forebay restaurant. We had the opportunity to eat at three of their restaurants — but more on those soon! While you could spend all your time on site, you probably didn’t come to Hershey, PA just to stay in the resort. Luckily the Hershey Lodge is just a short 5 minute drive to downtown Hershey and Hersheypark, and only about 15-20 minutes to the state capital of Harrisburg. So if you are staying in Hershey and want the full Hershey experience, the Hershey Lodge makes a great family option.
