We would like to thank you for your custom. It wasn’t such a long time ago that sleep was considered an activity for wimps. Life’s too short, they said in the power-crazed Eighties. "Sleep when you’re dead!" Today that just seems ignorant. For our brains, beauty and overall brilliance, there is no substitute for a good night’s sleep, and approximately one third of a life well lived should be spent tucked up in bed.

But just as everybody has wildly different dreams, we all have different hopes for our beds. Like houses, you get what you pay for. The Sleep Council recommends that you spend as much as you can afford. So what – when money is no object – does that mean you’re going to get? A visit to some of the best bed makers in Britain is an education in the science of sleep. It goes without saying that posture, ie your comfort, and temperature are essentials in guaranteeing a good night’s sleep, and the quality of a bed will ultimately come down to the materials used to make it. The king of those materials – common to most bespoke bed makers – is horse tail, which (at 26 inches long) once curled holds its spring much better than shorter fibres such as horse or cattle hair. Hair wicks moisture away to regulate the body temperature, and then allows it to evaporate elsewhere, so you don’t overheat. Wool also does this, but because it doesn’t have the springy properties, is better as a top surface.

However, it isn’t durable enough alone so it needs to be combined with something else: cashmere, silk...the sky’s the limit. A good bed is about much more than the mattress. What you put it on matters just as much, and the best bed makers specialise in divans precisely because a box is the most comfortable option available. Think of abed as being made up of layers, a millefeuille of springs with the best materials known to nature lined between them, and you’ll get an understanding of just how elaborate it’s possible to get. Harrods’ new Bed Studio recently opened to allow customers to browse a selection of brands under one roof.Vispring, Hästens, and Savoir Beds are all here, to name a few. "Customers are searching for the perfect mattress orbed frame and we find that increasingly they prefer beds that can be customised, or even fully bespoke," says Harrods’ head of home, Annalise Fard. So how do you choose? At the top level the main difference between the bed makers can seem slight.

It starts with heritage, passes through design, and ends with how bespoke each brand is prepared to go for its customers. Vispring revealed that it recently gold-plated the mattress springs for one insistent Chinese client. "We explained that it wouldn’t make the bed any more comfortable or in fact better in any way at all, only significantly more expensive. But that’s what he wanted, so that’s what we did," says managing director Mike Meehan. Stuffing mattresses with cash is an alternative form of banking, after all... Vispring was founded in 1901 by James Marshall, the British man credited with inventing the pocket spring that most of the high-end bed makers use today. He saw how the seat of a car bounced, and – in his search for a solution to help his wife’s bad back – the pocket spring was born. Back then, most people made mattresses out of old rags and farm materials, an unhygienic and uncomfortable method, and a disaster waiting to happen for anyone bed bound from illness.

Marshall’s sales pitch claimed that his beds were the most hygienic, as they were made from natural materials, and that’s still the case today: Vispring mattresses are made from the finest natural fibres, are hypoallergenic, contain no chemicals, and are breathable, thanks to moisture-repelling cotton and wool, which helps regulate body temperature. Initially popular with hotels, as Vispring’s reputation grew, its beds appeared in the first-class staterooms of Titanic and other liners when transatlantic crossings were big news. Inside each modern mattress, Vanadium steel springs are individually enclosed in pure calico then arranged in a honeycomb pattern, enabling each to function independently and so provide perfect support for the whole body. The mattress is then intricately side-stitched by hand to add extra support to the edges, before being hand-tufted, giving the finished article its characteristic domed surface effect. Another British brand with longstanding heritage is Savoir Beds, whose story begins in 1889 with the opening of the Savoy – an establishment that founder Richard D’Oyly Carte intended to be the world’s most luxurious hotel, with (of course) the world’s most wonderful beds.

The Savoy Bed was created to order by local upholstery company James Edwards and subsequently cradled all manner of film stars and musicians who came to stay. Over the course of the next century, Savoir Beds became an entity unto itself as many of those stars became dedicated fans. Frank Sinatra would only sleep on a Savoir Bed when he was in London;that was part of his rider. Liza Minelli bought one after her first night; Emma Thompson claimed it cured her insomnia. READ: The best mattress toppers Now fully independent of the hotel group, Savoir’s owners remain dedicated to the original mission: making every bed by hand and to order. Like many heritage brands, it’s not a business built on efficiency, says managing director Alistair Hughes. "To do something a certain way takes time. An £8,000 bed takes about 40 hours, and that goes up significantly as you go through the range. Most beds in this country are made in less than an hour." Like Vispring, Savoir receives a lot of customers at its factory.

"When they’re spending a lot of money people like to see the bed being made, it’s a very personal thing." Wedded to using horse tail (which you can see being curled in its factory) and the best materials available, Savoir does not cut corners unless you’re talking about making a specially shaped octagonal bed for example, in which case it will move the ends of the earth to make that happen for you. "We’re the only company using big springs in the box, because although it’s more labour intensive to use them, we know it makes a real difference to comfort," says Hughes. "The box spring is often neglected. People talk about the mattress or topper, thinking this top layer is what matters, but the box spring or divan is really important, too; it’s really a combination of everything." Visiting the factories is fascinating, but testing a bed is vital. If you visit the Hästens showroom on Great Titchfield Street you can experience their Vividus model – a £69,000 super bed.

It offers the ultimate sleep experience, says manager James Newell. The Vividus is everything Hästens already does in all of its other beds but with longer springs and more layers of materials. Each customised Vividus mattress is created by hand, taking between 140 and 160 man-hours to complete. Unlike most beds, the Vividus frame doesn’t arrive pre-built but is handmade in the factory by craftsmen to precise specifications. Featuring excellent dovetailing details in slowly-growing Arctic pine and oiled oak, it takes a week to make. Superfine hand-selected, hand-teased horse hair is layered with cotton, wool, down and10-turn steel springs. The Vividus springs (like all the ones in Savoir beds) are strung together with string in the traditional way rather than being clipped together, "which means they move differently and have a slightly different feel," says Newell. Flax is added between the springs to ensure a completely silent bed, too. And, finally, the distinctive checked Hästens upholstery is, he says, a matter of pride for its customers.
