Residents of the city are by far the most dissatisfied with the gifts they receive, a new survey has said. A whopping 71% of households claimed to have received at least one unwanted gift in the past year, revealed the Gift Me Not survey conducted by online marketplace OLX in collaboration with Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB). The survey, which looked at 16 cities, was conducted as part of OLX's Consumer Research on Used Goods and Selling Trends (CRUST), an annual study that estimates the size of the used goods market in India. Chandigarh stood second with 50%, and in third place was Mumbai with 38% of those surveyed not wanting the gifts they received. Chennai, where only 2% of those surveyed admitted to having received gifts they did not want, stood at the bottom, and was followed by Bhubaneswar and Pune. The survey also found that one in four Indian homes receives gifts they had no use for in the past year.

A little less than half of those surveyed admitted to 'hoarding' unwanted gifts, while a quarter regifted them. Around 7 per cent found means to sell their unused gifts while 5 per cent gave them away to charity. A mere 1 per cent of the respondents admitted to having thrown the gift away. "On the OLX website, the number of people mentioning that they are selling a product they were gifted has almost doubled since 2015," says Amarjit Singh Batra, CEO, OLX India. "The average incidence rate of receiving an unwanted gift has also jumped from 16% in 2015 to 26% this year. This could be a result of a growing culture of thoughtless gifting." The survey found that while the re-gifting culture is in the rise, many still do not re-gift. While a majority in North India were afraid of being 'judged' for re-gifting, in South India, a majority claimed that the value of the unwanted gift was in fact 'more than' what they would usually cough up for a gift. Those in the western India claimed to refrain from re-gifting as they do not know the value of the unwanted gift, while those in the east claimed to do so as the gift received was of 'a lesser value' than what they would spend.
