Posted by on May 28, 2001 at 21:11:57: In Reply to: Your suggestions for dealing with tempurpedic "problems" posted by Sleepless in Seattle on May 28, 2001 at 10:03:53:First, let me address your questions:Yes, Tempurpedic is a mattress that can be used perfectly well over a platform bed. In fact, that is probably ideal. The "foundation" that Tempurpecic sells is actually a solid box construction, not a "box spring." The shock-absorber effect that you get from a box spring (that helps extend the life of the steel springs in a mattress) is not necessary with a "memory foam" mattress. The only reason, then, to use one is to get the mattress another 8 or 9 inches up off the floor.Select Comfort Mattresses are, of course, an air mattress. They have a variety of models and there is something both positive and negative to be said about each (just like any other brand or type). The best I can do is to give you some general ideas that you can think about when shopping. The major advantage to air mattresses is adjustability.

There is a certain comfort in knowing that if you need a softer feel from your mattress because you have had a hard, physical day, you can adjust the feel to meet your preferences at the moment. Unfortuantely, the reality is that most people will "play" with this feature for the first couple of weeks, then set it at a feel they like and almost never touch the controls again! That's just how people are!But it is truly an advantage to have an adjustable feel if two people are in the bed and the two like a different firmness. This is the greatest strength of the air mattresses. About the only problem that I have come across is when his (for example) is very firm and hers is quite soft and they want to snuggle in the middle: There will be a drop-off from the firm to the soft side which can be quite awkward sometimes. Of course, at those times adjustment is always possible. Now, if there is a major drawback to the design, it comes from the physics of it. With air, when you push down in one spot, it pushes back up in another.

Because of this, when you first begin to let the pressure down from the firmest setting, it shapes nicely into your contours. But shortly after that shaping begins -- as you continue to soften the feel -- another change starts to happen: It starts to sag at the heaviest point of your body. On most people this will be at the hips. After the first few moments of contouring, the mattress progressively begins to become hammock-shaped. This can lead to progressively poorer support and sore lower backs on some people.(You can test this the same way I did: Take a broom handle into the store with you when you go shopping, lay it along your body from chin to feet as the mattress is at full pressure, then start to soften the feel. What will typically happen is a gap will start to form -- then widen -- at the hip region. The more you let the pressure out, the more the broom handle will form a bridge between your chest and your feet.)I can unequivocably say that air mattresses are a PERFECT choice for some people, but I believe it is only the 5-10% range.

Another 10% might be pleased, but it won't be a perfect choice for them.Serta Bradley Pillow Top: I'm afraid Serta is a bit of a bafflement. Y'see the Serta factories are franchises; they are not all operated the same. Then, add into the mix the fact that sometimes the same construction mattress may be sold under a variety of different names, and I am quickly lost. (This is done so a manufacturer can sell to more merchants in a small geopraphic region and give each a different model name. It makes it harder for the consumer to do competitive shopping so the merchant can protect his profitability. If competitive shopping is easy, then a price war develops between stores and profits go out the window.)I have not heard an unusual number of complaints about Serta. They are right in line with the other 3 major national brands -- Sealy, Simmons and Spring Air -- that combined make of 2/3 of the retail mattress sales in the country. By all reports, they are reputable company selling a broad range of products, from low price points to ultra high quality.

Unfortuantely, there is no way to know the specifics of the mattresses coming out of the franchise factory in your area!I only have this impression from having laid down on many many mattreses: I find that many models of Serta have a "tinny" feel as compared to the other national brands. They don't feel quite as "substantial" at comparable price-points as most of the other nationals. But this could be a result of the construction coming out of the particular franchise factory *I* was being exposed to! There is no way to tell! Now, at last, is there another mattress I recommend? Well, as a rule of thumb, I try to steer clear of recommending any particular mattress. My hope, as much as possible, is to talk only about general principles, and not specific brands and models. Even when asked direct questions like you have, I still try to keep my information general and avoid making a recommendation. Here are a couple of little known facts: Nearly all the springs used in mattresses are made by the same company, Leggett and Platt.

Nearly all the padding materials used in mattresses are coming from just a few companies. The same is true for the fabrics used on them. The differences between brands of innerspring mattresses mostly comes down to the choices a particular brand makes on spring set and padding materials. But someone who, for example, says "My Bonnell Coils Springs are better than his!" is probably not telling an accurate story! There is far more alike from brand to brand than there is different, at comparable price points. One suggestion: If you buy a new mattress with a good warranty, consider what would happen if you found yourself Sleepless in Cleveland! Would you be able to get your failing mattress serviced without sending it back to Seattle? Even though the components mostly come from the same sources, the company that turns those components into a mattress is the only one responsible for servicing a warranty problem. The component manufacturer will not service a mattress directly. If moving is a concern, be sure you buy a mattress with national representation.
