What may be old and unwanted to you will bring normality to families and individuals in the local community, who without our support would be struggling without what you consider to be the basics. We believe in creating hope and restoring dignity to people’s lives and by donating your unwanted furniture you are supporting this philosophy by giving someone a fresh start. 30% of furniture donated finds its way into the home of someone who really needs it. We help distribute it to individuals and families on very low incomes who need furniture quickly and at a minimal cost. During 2011, 232 families received 145 tons of furniture. To access this help, those in need are referred to us from reputable and responsible community organisations. And we are always trying to get these numbers higher. Surely this environmentally friendly reuse of your discarded items has to be a better option than the local tip. And what about the other 70% I hear you asking? These items are put into our weekly Friday furniture sale and the money generated contributes to the cost of collecting and delivering furniture to those in need and to the employment costs of our delivery drivers, some of whom were unemployed before they took a job at Christian Concern.

Although we offer a free collection service, many people choose to make a donation to cover our running costs and to ensure that we can keep our vans on the road. Are you in need of furniture or children’s equipment to make life manageable and more comfortable? Dependent upon your circumstances you may be eligible to low-cost, re-useable furniture as well as bedding packs, curtains, utensils and other resources for setting up a home. These may be accessible through a range of referring agencies such as Social Workers, Probation Services, Housing Associations and Health Care Workers. If you think you may be entitled to this service, contact your support worker from the appropriate agency who will guide you through the process. If you have a client that you believe would benefit from our services and you are not currently registered with us, please ring 01270 586186 and ask to speak to our Referral Co-ordinator about our referral criteria and process. Our current system of referrals is based around choice and affordability. The person you refer will select the furniture they need from our stock. We aim to provide quality furniture and goods from our Re-use Centre at a low cost.
Your clients will receive a 40% discount on the items they need. We also offer bedding packs, curtains, utensils and other resources for setting up a home at a minimal cost. Francine was referred to Christian Concern through Crewe Women’s Aid. She had taken refuge there with her youngest son and only a bin-bag full of clothes after having suffered several blows in life including cancer, the break-up of her marriage and domestic violence. The time spent at Women’s Aid helped Francine get back on her feet and feel safe. She was still receiving treatment at Christie’s and waiting for a new home. She was referred for furniture from Christian Concern and received beds, a three piece suite, sheets and cutlery. She admitted, “Without their help, I wouldn’t be able to afford anything,” adding that, “I’ve always been independent and didn’t know there are people who help like this.” When she came to Christian Concern she was a bit nervous, but the receptionist gave her space to calm herself and feel reassured.
Similarly when the team on the van delivered the furniture, she felt a bit overwhelmed wondering how she was going to put the wooden bed together. However, the delivery guys were really friendly and assembled the bed for her, taking time to make sure she was comfortable, even though they had to get to the next delivery. Francine mentioned that having the furniture had taken the pressure off her, especially finding it at an affordable price. And now there are no more clothes in bin bags in her house. She said: “It’s a new start in life.” Francine has since come to the weekly Friday sale where she enjoys the atmosphere. She says “I like the people there, they are friendly and patient. The prices are reasonable and when I come in, they’ve got what I want.” She also joined one of our community computer courses and is interested in volunteering/volunteers at the Christian Concern Coppenhall shop. Francine mentioned that she had always been a Christian and found that she simply had to trust that “God will show you the way forward.”
