What started with the Nike Air Yeezy 2 "Red October" got so hot that its own critical mass-ness became news itself. But that was then, and the all-red heat joined pumps light-up soles, and ugly-on-purpose colorways in the annals of over-hyped sneaker trends. But as these things go, a new obsession has since taken the place of all-red sneaker. But it too is about to hit shark-jumping status. See, these days, it's vegetable tan and/or Vachetta leather kicks that are currently flooding the marketplace. Back in 2013, a Japanese brand called Hender Scheme unveiled its 100% vachetta leather twists to classic sneaker silhouettes like Air Force 1s and Vans Eras. And at the time, Hender Scheme's everyday-sneakers-as-museum-level-pieces seemed clever and new.

Plus, with prohibitive prices nearing $1,000 a pair, they became must-have grails for sneaker collectors. A few months later, high-end women's brand Céline made its own $1,000 Air Force 1s-inspired shoes in vegetable tan leather. Naturally, other brands—and a lot that sell sneakers at mall-ready prices—followed. Asics released an all-tan version of its popular Gel-Lyte III. New Balance came out with a lifestyle sneaker in tan leather. Number 288, one of our favorite indie sneaker labels, introduced a high-top "natural leather" sneaker. World of Niché, the mysterious new upstart sneaker label, currently sells a vegetable tan running-inspired style in its by-appointment-only shop. And on End Clothing's website, a label called Zespa has a perforate take on a tan leather sneaker they like to call "Nude Nappa."The thing is, all "vachetta" leather technically refers to is the fact that this quality leather is untreated or un-dyed. Vegetable tan leather on the other hand means that the leather is dyed with natural materials as opposed to chemicals.

But in the world of sneakers, the two are almost interchangeable, both basically used to mean shoes that are done up in nude-hued leather of some kind. In 2016, behemoths like Jordan (Air Jordan 1 "Pinnacle") and Adidas (Stan Smith "Horween"), are making their own versions of tan leather sneakers. Even Nike recently introduced a vachetta leather version of the Air Force 1, a bizarre meta wink at Hender Scheme and Céline (and a signifier that this trend has finally come full circle). With all these newer and more visible global brands jumping on the light colored leather bandwagon, the original fresh concept and craftsmanship that made Hender Shemes cool quickly lost its appeal. Today, the color is so saturated that it looks more like an aesthetic bandaid for played-out silhouettes than anything else. (Which isn't to say they don't look good—tan leather kicks look damn good with some faded jeans and a gray sweater). Sneakers are basically the handbags of menswear, an industry that's run off of a few original ideas that give way to big trends and plenty of copycats.

And there's nothing wrong with that for the guy who wants some cool sneakers but doesn't have a cool grand to drop on each pair. But we'll take originality and innovation over mass appeal any day. The point is, tan leather sneakers were once both original and innovative—but it's time for everyone to move on.If you’re struggling to find the perfect gift for a special someone in your life this holiday season, it may be time to start thinking outside of the box — the sneaker box, that is.
