It does not have the cover on it but I always put a mattress cover over mine. It is more on the firm side. It has not given out and has maintained its shape.

I was worried about the same thing, and I have been pleasantly surprised at how cool this topper is. Heat hasn't been a problem at all. I don't find it to be too warm at all. I think the gel/foam combination makes a difference. This topper is like sleeping on a cloud! It was very comfortable...HOWEVER if you run hot or have hot flashes...uugghhh.
