All screen doors, no matter how decorative, are sized by width and height. Sizing a screen door may seem like a simple task, but when you have a screen door custom made and your measurements are a bit off, you'll be stuck with a door that can't be used and an emptier wallet. On modern homes most screen doors are all nearly the same size. You save the cost of manufacturing when you can use a pre-made screen door that fits the size opening you have. But for extra large entry-ways, measuring correctly is the key to a screen door that operates smoothly. Stand outside and in front of your door opening. This is where you will begin to size the screen door so that it fits properly. Measure the width from inside to the inside of the screen door frame at the top. Repeat this at the approximate middle of the frame and then again at the bottom of the door frame. The smallest width of these measurements is the one that you use. Mark that measurement down on a piece of paper with a pencil. Measure the height of the screen door frame by taking two measurements;
one on the far right side and one on the far left side. Use the smaller of these two measurements and write it down. Subtract 1/4 inch from the width of the frame measurement and subtract 1/2 inch from the height of the frame measurement. This allows a comfortable fit when the screen door is installed.
