If the door is 40 y.o., you might also be facing a rehab issue too, with the header of the door framing. If it is sagging, it's probably because of settling of the home itself and warpage of the header, because years ago, they didn't really have stringent building codes like they have today. Your door header may consist of sistered/sandwiched 2x4's, and before replacing a slider or any door/window, you should check and see what type of materials was used in the door header.

In our old house, built in '52, we found that 2x4's were used in the window and door headers, we replaced all headers with sistered 2x8's. That's not the case in some homes though, some builders actually went the extra mile on some construction of old homes, but you definitely need to find out. 93 posts, read 135,250 times 3,312 posts, read 6,630,724 times I had a door that was bad. We all know how much cats like to curl up in a sunny spot by the window.

Well, the new Sunny Seat cat bed makes it really easy to set-up the perfect window perch for kitty. The folks at Sunny Seat sent us one to test, and I was a bit hesitant at first. You see, the bed mounts to a glass window or door using suction cups, which made me skeptical, but once I took the bed out of the package and saw the serious industrial suction cups, my mind was set at ease. Then I saw the video on their website that shows 50 lbs. of bricks stacked on the Sunny Seat and that proved it. This thing is sturdy! The Sunny Seat has a strong plastic tube frame covered with a durable canvas cover that can be machine washed. The frame and cover mount to any smooth glass surface with four giant suction cups and two cables attached to two metal springs. It’s incredibly easy to install and the cats took to it right away. This is an excellent solution for apartment dwellers who want to install a cat perch without drilling into the walls. There are of course plenty of warnings in the instructions, like not to use the Sunny Seat on antique glass or textured glass that might not allow the suction cups to attach securely.

I attached it on the sliding glass door to the catio and it’s holding perfectly. You may have seen the Sunny Seat for sale on TV. It is also available online for just $19.99 plus shipping & handling, and in typical “as seen on TV” fashion, there’s a “But wait, there’s more!” offer: buy one, get one free, plus you get two free laser cat toys. Stay up-to-date on the latest Sunny Seat news on their Facebook page. One lucky reader is going to receive a free Sunny Seat! To enter, please leave a comment on this post with your thoughts about the Sunny Seat. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing and announced on April 4, 2011. One entry per person. During every autumn migration, the Chintimini Wildlife Center admits numerous birds that have suffered injuries from colliding with windows.

As birds group together and move en masse to warmer climes, they often frequent backyard birdfeeders and concentrate around homes. Greater concentrations mean more birds are likely to crash into windows. To minimize these hazzards, make the glass visible to the birds by doing the following: Attach black silhouettes of diving hawks or strips of opaque tape to windows. Move houseplants away from the glass and close curtains over windows and sliding glass doors whenever possible. Attach decorative objects with suction cups to the window, as long as they do not mimic roosting areas. Blinds and window screens may provide enough of a visual clue to birds so they can avoid injury. In the event that a bird does hit a window and is injured, do the following: Gently pick up the bird in a towel and place it in a ventilated box. Put the box in a dark, quiet place (a closet works well), and do not feed it, give it water, or handle it further. Call a wildlife rehabilitation facility for advice.
