Sleepwell puts IoT on the bed, creates customized mattresses for customers - Shopping for a new mattress is, for many, like an adventure: You head into a showroom to briefly lie on various models, before coming to a conclusion about each. But here’s a mattress maker who is attempting to let you bypass the needle-in-a-haystack search. Sheela Foam Ltd., maker of Sleepwell mattresses, has developed a new mattress called ‘Perfect Match’ that empowers customers to select the right mattress suited for their body type and provide a new sleeping experience to them. “Perfect Match is one of the areas where IT is enabling the next level of personalization for customers. After a detailed analysis of each customer’s pressure points in the body, we are generating a recipe for the mattress, customizing it and then assembling it at our manufacturing units,” says Rahul Gautam, Managing Director, Sheela Foam. The technology innovation around Perfect Match takes into account the body mass distribution on the sleeping mattress.
People with similar height and weight may have fat deposition that varies from one to the other. The technology in use takes all this data into account, analyses it and recommends the best suited mattress for every individual. Pertisth Mankotia, CIO, Sheela Foam explains that when customers visit a Sleepwell showroom, they are requested to lie on a bed called a “Senso-Bed”. This bed is equipped with sensors and control points through which the pressure point distribution of the customer’s body can be easily determined and mapped. This information then travels to a cloud based controller system. “This system is a self-correcting and a learning algorithm. The data is then compared for different body structures. We have fed as many as 98 percent of all possible body structures in this algorithm. This helps the system to figure out what kind of firmness or softness is required for a body structure, basis which it recommends the best suited mattress for an individual. The findings are then displayed on a tab in the showroom, and the customer gets the recommendation for their mattress,” Mankotia says.
Sleepwell carried out a detailed studied around the processes that can enhance the overall sleeping experience -- be it comfort, support, or every other factor related in the process. They also studied the human body, and how it relates to the sleeping surface, the role of bones and muscles during sleep etc. Finally, they used their own expertise as a mattress manufacturer to create this concept. According to Sanjeev Luthra, head, product development at Sheela Foam, “A single mattress is often imperfectly suited to two people. With Perfect Match we can customise the mattress for a different type of sleeper, for example, a husband and wife, if we are told which side of the mattress they sleep on.” We usually spend one third of our life sleeping on a mattress. So, if you end up buying a wrong mattress, you may wake up with a backache or stiffness or you may only have poor sleep. “Mattress is not just a surface that we sleep on. It is an investment in health. Sleepwell, being a very mature and a responsible brand leader, wants to bridge the gap between quality mattresses and quality sleep,” says Gautam.
Currently, the technology is available in the company’s 250 showrooms.
