On the third Friday of every month, I have a column called Eco-Friendly Fridays. I started this column because I run across so many amazing organic, non-food items that I believe people ought to know about. When a person talks about living an organic lifestyle, the immediate things that come to mind are food, body care products, and home cleaning products. Yet, the mattresses that we spend 1/3rd of our life on do not get nearly enough attention as they should. So, I paid a visit to my friend Amy Chender, the Chief Operating Officer and Director of Social Responsibility at ABC Home in New York City, who gave me the lowdown on the importance of buying an organic mattress and the health risks that conventional mattresses pose. Needless to say, this video was a real eye-opener for me and I am hoping that people will develop a much greater appreciation for the environment in which they sleep. If you’re ever in New York City, stopping by ABC Home is a must. ABC Home is an iconic destination using beauty and commerce as a tool for change, and it features carpets, furniture, accessories, beauty & bath, jewelry & apparel, beauty & wellness, food, baby items, and two phenomenal restaurants, ABC Kitchen and ABC Cocina.

It is a true favorite among all of us in the organic community. To learn more about the wide selection of organic mattresses that ABC Home offers, click HERE. Of those, nine new models were added to our recommended list of 21 mattresses, including one that tops our popular foam champ, the Casper. The new foam winner is Sleep on Latex Pure Green, which edged out the Casper with its excellent scores for people who sleep on their back. Five other new brands are also represented in the ratings: Lull, Novosbed, Purple, Restonic, and Sleep Science. This is the second batch of mattresses that we’re presenting with our new scoring method. Instead of just averaging the scores for our petite and large/tall test subjects, we now present six columns so that you can find a mattress that better suits your size and sleep style.

To that end, we have scores for petite, average, and large/tall side sleepers and petite, average, and large/tall back sleepers. (The average is indeed an average of petite and large/tall.) If you sleep with a partner, you can choose a mattress that suits you both without having to guess. New Top Innerspring Mattresses Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Middletown, $2,300. This innerspring is very good for side sleepers of all sizes (petite, average, and large/tall) and for average and large/tall back sleepers. If you’re petite and sleep on your back, it’s an excellent choice. It aced our durability test, which simulates eight years of use, and you can change position with little bother to your sleepmate. Beautyrest Recharge World Classic Keaton, $1,340. This mattress is very good no matter what size you are and what sleep position you chose, and durability is excellent. Sleep position changes are mostly muted. Beautyrest Platinum Hailey Luxury Firm, $1,190. This Beautyrest has similar scores to its brandmate on all tests, except it’s only so-so if you’re a large/tall person who sleeps on your back.

MacyBed Lux by Kingsdown, $1,500. Consider this if you sleep on your side or if you’re petite and sleep on your back, but it’s only so-so for average and large/tall back sleepers. Durability is excellent, and movements are mostly muted. Holding their own: Charles P. Rogers Powercore Estate 5000, $1,500, is still the winner, followed by the Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Elite Kelburn, $1,350. New Top Foam Mattresses Sleep on Latex Pure Green, $1,200. Our new foam winner, this mattress is a great choice for people of all sizes who sleep on their back and is very good for all side sleepers. It aced the durability test, which simulates eight years of use, and mostly mutes movements by your mate. Serta Luxury 12” Gel Memory Foam, $500. This foam bed is very good for sleepers of all sizes and is excellent if you’re petite and sleep on your back. Durability is aces, and ease of turning is very good. From another new brand, this mattress is very good for petite and average side sleepers, and average and large/tall back sleepers.

It’s excellent for petite back sleepers but only so-so for large/tall side sleepers. Durability is excellent, and ease of movement is very good. The Purple Bed, $1,000. Another newbie, the Purple should not be the first choice for large/tall people, because test results were only so-so. But it offers very good support to petite and average sleepers. Ashley Sleep the Perfect 10, $700. Large/tall side sleepers may want to reconsider, but this mattress is a very good choice for everyone else. Durability is top-notch, and ease of movement is very good. Holding their own: The Casper, $850, was bumped to the second spot, followed by Novaform 14” Serafina Pearl Gel, $800, from Costco. And Tuft & Needle, $600, lost some ground to the newcomers. The two Sleep Number adjustable air beds in our tests, the Sleep Number i8, $3,000, and Sleep Number c2, $800, still retain their perch.
