Cotton forms the basis of futons and additional materials make a futon softer, firmer or more supportive. Wool is soft and regulates temperature and humidity, helping the futon stay fresh and aerated. Futons with wool are warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Latex is incredibly supportive, distributing weight effectively and contouring to the body. We recommend latex futons for sleeping on every night. Latex futons last longer than any other kind of futon. Polyester is light and and stays fluffy longer than wool. Our Medium and Firm futons have polyester cores and make for great batch or guest beds. All our futons are encased and tied in unbleached cotton canvas. Thick, soft, supportive & resilient. Futons can be used on all our Fixed-Slat Bases and Sofa Beds, or on a flat surface like the floor or flat base*. We do not recommend using a futon mattress on a flexible-slat base. If you are looking for a mattress for a flexi-slat base we recommend our Natural We recommend using a removable, machine-washable futon protector with your bed futon; and either a futon protector or futon cover with your futon sofa bed or bed settee. We use a blend of 40 % polyester and 60% wool in our standard futons to keep them fluffy and supportive for longer. We also have organic New Zealand wool as a special option. Please be aware that pure wool compresses considerably faster than a poly-wool blend. Futonz natural futons are constructed from layers of quality natural fibres: cotton, wool and latex rubber. They are tightly contained in a hand-tufted 100% cotton casing: do not remove this casing! To keep the futon casing clean, we recommend using our zip-off, machine washable futon protector on beds or a futon cover on sofa beds.
Both wool and cotton are natural insulators which offer the qualities of warmth in winter and coolness in warmer weather; a natural climate control. These materials 'breathe' - allowing air to flow through the fibres and hence both body and atmospheric moisture to disperse. Following these simple instructions will ensure your futon retains its quality and comfort. When using your futon as a bed, turn the futon from head to tail and over; so that the side that was against the slats faces up. Allow the futon to drop vigorously onto the slats when you turn it. We recommend doing this once a week and when you change your bedding. If you use your futon as a settee, turn it regularly to ensure that not always the same area is used as the seat. Occasionally, in dry sunny weather, you can drape your futon where it is exposed to the fresh air and sunlight for a few hours. This causes the cotton strands to unfurl, and regain fluffiness, revitalising the filling. Caution: do not risk it being rained on!
