A twin is a room with 2 single and seperate beds about 3 feet wide each.

Anyway yes, a twin will be two beds while a double will probably (but not necessarily) have just one bed. There are not "two twin sized beds" in one room. There are two single beds in one room. That is a twin room. A double room means a double bed. That is why it's called a double room. UK double beds are 54 inches wide, just over four and a half feet across. A reasonable size for two small children or one sprawly adult but not ideal for mother and daughter. In the US, we call a single bed a "twin" -- it makes absolutely no sense at all, but that's what we call a 3' wide single bed. Short answer, a twin is 2 beds, a double is one bed. Confusingly, some rooms with 'king' size beds are in fact two singles attached together so the room can be used as a double or twin. Longer answer, size of bed depends. Many (most) twins will be 2 x single beds (3' wide) but some, usually US chains like Marriott, and Crowne Plazas have twins with 2 doubles (4'6 beds).
You need to ask the hotel is this is important. And let's not start on what 'Queen' size means. I've never understood it in all my travels! At the cheaper end of the market you will find that a twin room is a room with two single beds and a double room is one in which the two single beds have been pushed together. I am sure that I am not the only person to have been caught out by this con. I would be surprised if two normal-sized adults could not fit into a double bed. It really depends how much space you want to yourselves.
