Neighbours heard a 'terrifying' scream before the body of an 11-year-old girl was found in a house in Victoria's north. The gruesome discovery was made by the girl's mother in their home on Inchbold Street in Wangaratta about 11am on Sunday, 7News reported.A 29-year-old man, from Mildura, is undergoing medical assessment under police guard at Wangaratta Hospital, while several other people are also assisting police with their enquiries into the suspicious death. Friends and neighbours delivered flowers in memory of the dead little 11-year-old girl The body of an 11-year-old girl has been found at a home in Wangaratta, in Victoria's north The man in custody is not a relative of the family but is described as an acquaintance.Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have seen a man dressed in cargo shorts, a singlet top and not wearing any shoes, in the early hours of yesterday morning. The man may have been in the vicinity of Inchbold Street and the Hume Freeway, between Snow and Glenrowan roads, between the hours of 4.30am and 6.30am.

These locations are some distance apart and investigators are keen to speak to any drivers who possibly saw the man or offered him a lift.Neighbour Jenelle Robinson told The Border Mail she heard 'a terrible, terrifying scream, like someone wailing' before the body was found. Victoria Ambulance paramedics were called to the address about 11am, but the girl was already dead. The girl is thought to have died some time between 1.30am and 11am on Sunday.A woman who was believed to be a relative or friend of the family was seen breaking down at the scene as she learned of the tragedy, The Border Mail reported.Ms Robinson said the girl had played with her two sons and had lived at the house she was found in with her mother. The girl lived in the home on the quiet suburban street with her mother. Neighbours say the mother's partner would visit on a regular basis Victoria Ambulance paramedics were called to the address about 11am, but the girl was already dead Neighbour Jenelle Robinson told The Border Mail she heard ' a terrible, terrifying scream , like someone wailing' before the body was foundShe said the partner of the girl's mother would come the house on a regular basis.

A Wangaratta resident, whose daughter's grandmother lives next door to the home, told Daily Mail Australia the neighbour heard the mother cry out when she found the body on Sunday morning. She described the street where the girl was found as one of the rougher sides of the area.'I presume it's known to be one of the badder sides of Wangaratta,' the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said.'You just get a few bad ones that give it a bad name.' The woman said the 11-year-old girl went to one of the local primary schools.A father of one of the girl's friends said his son, who attended the same school as her - Yarrunga Primary School, was struggling to come to terms with her death. Flowers and stuffed toys have been laid outside the girl's home at a makeshift shrine Neighbours say parties were common at the home, which the girl shared with her mother'Our son has gone to school knowing his friend will not be there any more and he is a bit upset about [it]... r.i.p,' he wrote on Facebook. He later told Daily Mail Australia the school community was 'very shocked' and 'really just words can not describe' how they were feeling.

The father said he was not sure if the school was offering counselling but 'they did say to us if the kids can't cope, they will ring the kids' parents and they can go home'.'She [the girl] had lots of friends in the school and out of the school,' he added.Another neighbour Dirk Todd - who lives next door - said a party had been held the night before the child's death until 2am on Sunday, adding Saturday parties were not uncommon at the address.'There are parties there probably every second weekend,' he told The Border Mail. Mr Todd said the girl and her mother had lived in the house for two to three years. A third neighbour, Clinton Corker, said he often saw the girl playing in front of the house with a dog.Residents from the area were 'distressed'. A person from the Wangaratta area said the cause of the death was unclear but it was tragic as a 'beautiful little girl' had been lost, the Herald Sun reported. Tributes have started flowing on Facebook for the young child. She has been described as 'a beautiful girl'

Homicide detectives are at the scene investigating the death, which is being treated as suspicious The gruesome discovery was made on Inchbold Street on Sunday morning after neighbours said a party was held on Saturday nightFlowers and stuffed toys have been laid outside the girl's home at a makeshift shrine where tearful neighbours and mourners are paying their respects to the 11-year-old.One neighbour, who had two children, said she had hardly slept since news of the tragedy emerged. 'I keep on asking myself how this could happen... it has really rocked the people in this street and Wangaratta,' she told the Wangaratta Chronicle.'It's a really quiet street but I couldn't sit inside yesterday when I heard what had happened.'One mourner, whose child went to the same school as the girl, said her life had ended too soon and described her as a 'beautiful kid'.'She was a little girl who had her whole life ahead of her,' the woman said.A candlelight tribute will be held for the girl at Kiwanis Park near the gum trees on Howard Crescent.According to the Facebook event, the child used to walk her dog in the park.'In light of the horrendous event that happened in our town over the weekend, lets get our families together to say goodbye to this little soul and renounce the violence that occurred.

It's not welcome here,' the event page said. Tributes have also started flowing on Facebook for the young child whose age was earlier withheld as police were notifying relatives of her death. 'A street away & a school down the road - very, very sad - rest in peace beautiful girl - far, far too close too home & far, far too young & unjust - I'm going to find this one hard to try & explian [sic] to my 6 yr old who will ask questions after school tomorrow - rest in peace beautiful girl,' one woman wrote.  Although police activity in the area has been increased during the search for fugitives Gino and Mark Stocco, the death was not considered to be related to the pair, the Herald Sun reported.Assistant Commissioner Rick Nugent said he could not reveal why the 29-year-old was in hospital.'The crime scene there in Wangaratta will be processed by our crime scene specialists and homicide,' he told ABC News 24 on Monday.'There will be a number of witness statements taken from around the area, follow-up investigation, and at some point in time they will speak to the man who's in custody.'
