Macy's is about to kick off its next wave of store closures.The retailer revealed plans in August to shut down 100 stores in early 2017 as it battles slowing sales and growing online competition.Macy's Chief Financial Officer Karen Hoguet provided an update on the closures at a conference last week, and said some stores will start shutting down before the end of the year, according to the Cincinnati Business Journal.Hoguet didn't reveal how many closures are imminent, but said "All 100 will not close at year end," according to the Business Journal.See other major chains struggling in 2016

Reuters reports the company listed assets in the range of $100 million to $500 million, and liabilities of between $100 million and $500 million, according to a court filing. It plans to continue operating with a $160 million loan from Crystal Financial LLC, but will close 154 locations in North America.
The complete list of Aeropostale store closings, revealed by Fortune, includes one Central New York location in the Great Northern Mall in Clay. Two other Upstate New York stores, at the Boulevard Mall in Amherst and the McKinley Mall in Buffalo, will also be axed. According to a press release, store closing sales are scheduled to begin this weekend (May 7-8), but it's unclear when the locations will shutter altogether. Aeropostale also has a location at Destiny USA in Syracuse, but it is not part of the initial closings list. Stores at the Waterloo Premium Outlets and New Hartford's Sangertown Square Mall are also not affected. In total, 113 Aeropostale stores closing are in the U.S. and 41 are in Canada. Some 117 of those lost money last year, Fortune reports. Aeropostale closed its Shoppingtown Mall store in DeWitt in 2013 and also removed its P.S. from Aeropostale kids clothing store from Destiny USA in 2014. "While initiatives such as the implementation of our two-chain Factory and Mall strategy and our merchandise repositioning have started to gain traction, the ripple effects of an ongoing dispute with our second-largest supplier put substantial strain on our liquidity while also preventing us from realizing the full benefits of our turnaround plans.
As a result, we have chosen to take more decisive and aggressive action to create a leaner, more efficient business that is well-positioned to compete and succeed in today's retail environment," CEO Julian Geiger said in a statement "We appreciate the loyalty and support of our customers, employees and business partners as we complete this process."
