All Revealed Reviews by Hawaii Revealed This resort receives a What's this? Resort photos supplied by the resort, but the reviews below are exclusive and unbiased. (866) 716-8109 or (808) 661-0031 This was the first resort built in Ka‘anapali, back in 1962 with results that are not overtly Hawaiian in feel but more modern and a tad spartan. Regular rooms are fairly small, but feature their “Sweet Sleeper” beds. The resort lacks the same splash that other mega-resorts offer. (Well, except for the cliff diver who dives into the ocean every night at sunset from Black Rock.) Instead, the 23 acres of grounds are green but comparatively simple and less exotic, dominated by large expanses of lawn. The beach is the star here, and don’t you forget it. Located at the north end of Ka‘anapali Beach, the water here is heavenly, and the swimming is good during calm seas. Their swimming pool has a cool mist coming from the rocks that feels pretty good when you walk by.

It’s laid out so that adults tend to hang out on one end (with drinks and food) and the children’s side is on the other end with food service nearby that caters more to their tastes. Part of the hotel is built on Black Rock (Hawaiian name Pu‘u Keka‘a). Every night they have a torch lighting ceremony culminating with the torch bearer leaping off the short cliff at Pu‘u Keka‘a. This is a re-enactment of King Kahekili’s leap in the 1700s, which demonstrated to his subjects that he had god-like powers. (The Hawaiians believed that this is the area where spirits go to depart this world after death, and any living persons jumping here would die.) The ceremony is dramatic and offers excellent photo ops. The Cliff Dive Grill by the beach attracts a lot of people around sunset to view the ceremony and serves their signature Black Rock Lager made on the island by Maui Brewing Company. Snorkeling and scuba around Black Rock are superb and they have free demos available for scuba and snuba in the pool.

A few nice features are the “Arrive and Dine” allows you to order (from the Internet) food for your arrival delivered to your room—especially good for late check-ins. They also have a drive-thru food service called “Wiki Grinds” for those wanting to head out for the day. You have signing privileges at all Westin resort restaurants in the area. Their keiki program (at the Westin Maui resort) is $85 per day, $60 per night. They have free family movie nights outdoors once a week in the summer. A 3-course dinner for up to 4 people can be arranged by the beach for $175–$210 per person including tax and gratuity. You do feel a bit nickel and dimed here. They have a mandatory $25 per day resort fee that allows you to make local and toll-free calls, Internet access, area shuttle, some cultural programs and other things you may have thought were free anyway. Their “Adventure Club” activities such as lei making, fitness classes, etc., on site are mostly for an extra fee.

Cabanas with 4 chairs by the pool are $75/day, casabella chairs (for 2) are $45, a beach chair is $13 and umbrellas $20. The worst part is they pull the furniture off the beach at 5 p.m. just when you’d like to watch the sunset, but you can stay by the pool til 8 p.m. Self-parking is $20. Valet parking is $30. The reason for our Real Gem isn’t the rooms or services, but rather the beach location—it’s probably one of the best in West Maui, and the resort does have a relaxing, uncrowded feel, even when full. Rooms (320–420 sq. ft.) are $659–$979, suites (665–1,600 sq. ft.) $1,119–$4,999. There are also lots of packages and specials on their website. I was thinking of renting the two-person beach cabana for a day at the beach. The rental is $35 at the Sheraton. Has anyone rented these? Was it worth it? Also, do you recommend renting chairs/cabanas at the pool?Since my husband & I are considering the same thing for next month. I'm also curious if you have to reserve them in advance and if so, how far in advance. We've rented beach stuff from the Sheraton even when not staying there. Price is about $45 for none guests but worth it.

They guys set it up for you and are completely friendly and helpful. We've done cabana and beach chairs with umbrellas. Worth it to me. Go for it for at least one day. I stayed at the Sheraton last August and the chairs by the pool were not rentals. Since October shouldn't be as crowded as August, I wouldn't worry about chair availability. However, there were a couple of really nice locations under umbrellas set in cement that always went first. The sun was incredibly strong! The cabana by the pool is a different story. I believe there were only two and they were always occupied. If you're interested in the pool cabana make sure you get in line before the pool service booth opens up. A month ago it opened at either 7:00 or 8:00am. The Sheraton was really beautiful. There actually are a lot of cabanas right on the beach that you can rent, but you have to reserve one early in the day (I think you can call ahead). We rented one for a whole day and it was totally worth it as it provides a great way to stay out of the sun but still enjoy the beach.

My husband and I had a most relaxing "cabana nap" with the sound of the ocean lulling us to sleep. Doesn't get any better! My wife and I were there last week of Oct last year and initially we were not going to rent anything. But, there was not a cloud in the sky (over the beach anyway) and it got very hot. We opted for the chairs and umbrella and it worked out great. In the end, we were glad we did it. The sun was very intense that day. Is there a charge for the beach chairs and umbrellas? When we rented a padded double beach chair with small attached table in between and umbella-like cover (called a cabana) it was $35.00 for the day. This was a few years ago, though, so it might have gone up. I haven't used the cabanas at the sheraton but have used them next door at the KBH. I think it is absolutely worth it. In addition to staying out of the sun its really easy to nap in and keeps the trade winds and sand off of you. I think they are great! We rented a cabana at the Sheraton Maui.

It is good to call in advance ... and call instead of e-mail. We didn't use ours till afternoon, and the wind came up ... not the best. But if you like to hang all day at the beach, I say get one! Comfy, a little private and protection for your skin. There was no bar service at that time - or they missed us. I think cabanas are $35 a day -- but that may have changed. We've stayed at the Sheraton twice and think the beach cabanas are way worth it. If the hotel is busy you might need to plan ahead and reserve a day or two in advance. Depending on the time of year the wind can get strong and laying directly on the sand you can feel a bit sandblasted. The cabanas get you up off the sand and offer some great relaxing privacy. Nothing better than sitting in the cabana with a good book and Molokai on the horizon! The beaches are alcohol free so there is no bar service there as there would be around the pool. (But the Sheraton Pool Bar serves up the best Rum Runner on the island)
