I knew it was time to invest in a new one when hotel beds began to feel more comfortable than my own. But it wasn’t until I stayed at the Sheraton Diana Majestic during a work trip to Milan, however, that I found the bed of my dreams.Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds are specially made for the brand’s hotels by Sealy. While specifications vary to meet local regulations in different countries, the one I experienced seemed to cushion, cosset and embrace me, so I wasn’t so much lying on the bed as sleeping with it. On returning to London – and more broken nights – I wondered if I could buy a Sheraton Sweet Sleeper for home.

After all, savvy hotel brands have been quietly selling their beds to clued-up guests for a decade or more. I found the US-based Sheraton At Home website and, after emailing, was directed to an office in Paris handling European orders. I explained that I wanted a large single bed, rather than a double, as I’ve turned my master bedroom into a workspace and sleep in a compact second bedroom. Disappointingly, I was told I could only purchase a king, queen or double bed, which were all too wide for my room. After a restless night I called the Paris office and pleaded with them. Surely they could make a special order? Again, the response was negative. Although custom-made, the beds only come in regular sizes and single beds were not available. I had reluctantly resigned myself to searching elsewhere when, to my surprise, the Paris office called back a week later to say their head office had sanctioned a special order of one half of a twin bed – in effect, an oversized single. I was thrilled, but then had a lot of questions.

How high was it? Did the legs have castors? Were they supplied separately for screwing on? Would the carrier bring it up to my top floor? How would they cope with awkward stairs? The Paris office patiently answered all my emailed queries and suggested I send images if there were any access issues. Eventually I placed my order, paying €1,000 plus €450 for shipping. The delivery, six weeks later, was entirely straightforward. Three helpful chaps whisked the mattress and base upstairs and, in situ, screwed on the wooden legs (two with large wooden wheels). What makes the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper so comfortable is its construction and the attention to detail. Sealy developed the 30cm-deep inner-sprung mattress with orthopaedic surgeons to eliminate uncomfortable pressure points that can cause tossing and turning. Barrel-shaped springs individually housed in non-woven material pockets, are separately sealed and then joined together during production, allowing each spring to move independently.

Meanwhile an upholstered, 20cm-deep base absorbs a sleeper’s weight and motion while a deeply quilted mattress cover is topped by a quilted, fibre-filled white cotton fabric pad. As a model of luxurious craftsmanship, it’s exemplary. If I had made a circuit of top hotels I would have found exclusively designed beds of no doubt equivalent comfort available to purchase. Guests sleep on unique Sealy Posturepedic beds at Ritz-Carlton hotels and on Hilton Serenity beds featuring a Suite Dreams by Serta mattress at Hilton Hotels & Resorts, while the Heavenly beds at Westin Hotels are custom‑made by Simmons. Each can be bought from the hotel’s home-delivery website. Beds custom-built for other hotels can also be bought direct from manufacturers. Savoir beds, initially designed for The Savoy hotel in 1905, are tailor-made for The Savoy’s Royal and Riverside suites and also for The Boundary in London and The Lowell in New York. Peter Prescott, co-owner of The Boundary (with Terence and Vicki Conran) says: “I’d previously worked with the Savoy Group at Claridge’s where we regularly received favourable comments about the beds.

I also knew that Savoir supplies beds to discerning private customers and felt this was a good endorsement. From the outset, we’ve included details of our beds in the hotel services directory, and I know that several guests have noted this.” Another classic hotel, the family-run Goring, turned to Vi-Spring for its beds. “We wanted a bed that was firm enough to support our guests whatever their shape and size, but soft enough to be like floating on a cloud,” explains The Goring’s managing director, David Morgan-Hewitt. “We have bespoke beds based on Vi-Spring’s Hotel Classic that have higher than normal bases. There is nothing more luxurious than climbing up into a bed.” The Dorchester also favours Vi-Spring’s wares. “As a classic English hotel we’ve chosen the Vi-Spring’s Hotel Superb as it is handmade in the UK and filled with natural materials, such as Shetland wool and British fleece, which gives it true British provenance,” says The Dorchester’s hotel manager, John Scanlon.

Meanwhile, the recently opened Eccleston Square, a central London boutique hotel that makes a virtue of hi-tech devices such as in-room iPads and 3D televisions, has chosen the Comfortable II bed from Sweden’s oldest manufacturer, Hästens. “The model we’ve chosen is fully electronically adjustable with variable massage settings so it offers a haven for work, rest and play,” says the hotel’s company director, Olivia Byrne, who directs guests wishing to purchase similar beds to Hästens’ showroom. Other hotels featuring Hästens beds include the Four Seasons in New York, La Ciliegina in Naples and Hotel Kube in St Tropez. “A significant proportion of our sales come from people who experience a Hästens bed away from home,” confirms Jan Ryde, Hästens’ owner and creative director. “Every Hästens bed is built by a team of skilled craftsmen in our historic facility in Koping, Sweden, and it’s been that way for 160 years. We firmly believe that one night spent in a Hästens bed in a hotel will ‘sell’ a bed to guests.

Several hotel partners have specifically chosen beds from our consumer range to ensure that they are available for guests to purchase for their homes.” Starwood Hotels & Resorts has taken this concept even further by investing in developing beds for its various brands and selling them direct to home-owners. The Westin Hotels team spent more than a year creating its Heavenly Bed. “They began the process by filling a hotel ballroom with 50 beds from 35 major hotel chains plus luxury and boutique hotels around the world,” says Susanne Barfoed, vice president of brand management, Sheraton and Westin Hotels & Resorts. “After months spent testing hundreds of mattresses, pillows and bed linens, the Heavenly bed was born.” Barfoed believes the effort has paid dividends. “Soon after we introduced the Heavenly bed, Westin’s guest survey of overall guest loyalty and satisfaction increased dramatically,” she says. “And since 2000, when we first started selling Westin Heavenly Beds to guests, we’ve sold more than 100,000 around the world.
