In so doing, we also assist in the recycling efforts of the county. We successfully keep thousands of tons of waste out of local landfills each year. The ReStores provide a significant amount of funding toward the Chatham Habitat for Humanity mission of eliminating substandard housing in our community. Revenue generated from the ReStore funds between 4 and 6 Habitat homes per year. Together we transform lives, improve neighborhoods, and most importantly give hope and strength to our communities
We operate two stores: ReStore and ReStore Too. At ReStore, we sell home goods like furniture, appliances, house wares, home electronics, linens, dishes, and more. At ReStore Too, we sell new and used building materials including plumbing supplies, lumber, tools, hardware, paint, floor coverings, doors, windows, sinks, tubs and other construction materials. Inventory in both stores changes daily as new items are donated, processed and put out on the floor. These beds have been in someone else’s home and slept on for a minimum of 30 nights, often longer. While a month or two (or even three!) might not seem like that big of a deal, there are several things you should know about used mattresses and why Mattress Warehouse doesn’t participate in that practice. For example, did you know we lose up to eight ounces of bodily fluids each night? Since mattresses soak up fluid like a sponge, there’s a good chance if the fluid doesn’t evaporate, it could produce mildew and mold. While mildew will make your mattress smell bad, mold spores could cause major health issues. Exposure to mold can irritate your lungs, nose, throat, eyes, and more. According to WebMD, inhaling or touching mold spores can cause reactions such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rashes. For those with asthma, breathing the spores can cause asthma attacks.
Mold also affects others with sensitivity to the effects of mold, such as infants and children, the elderly, people with comprised immune systems, and people with chronic lung disease. Mattresses are also magnets for dead skin flakes, hair, dust, food crumbs, blood, dirt, grime and a host of other things. All of those things feed dust mites – five to 10 million of the microscopic spiders depending on the size of your mattress. Just one female mite can increase the total population by 25 to 30 new mites per week. Up to 80 percent of people with asthma are sensitive to dust mites, while others suffer more serious allergic reactions. Humans shed about a fifth of an ounce of dead skin flakes each week, which dust mites love to eat. The problem isn’t just with the dust mites themselves, it’s their feces. The protein substance in dust mite feces produces antibodies in humans who are allergic when these are inhaled or touched by the skin. Since it’s microscopic, you’d never see it.
Some mattress stores go through “standard measures” to clean used mattresses before they sell them. Since they’re marking down the price for you, they’re hoping you don’t really think about all of the things mentioned above. The question is: since you spend about a third of your life in bed, would you really want to buy a used mattress in the first place, let alone one that has gone through “standard measures” to be cleaned?
