The carry sleeve is a lightweight, noisy, thin poly shell with single stitching which probably won't take too much abuse. I'd likely toss it, but the cinch cord is nice with a pinch clamp. Right on top of the compressed mat is a small patch kit with two 2.75" x 3.5" patches and a tube of patching cement.

The 190T poly patches provided far more confidence in this product than my evil skeptical alter ego (I'm the nice one) anticipated. The mat itself is factory rolled (compressed tighter than I'll probably manage after the test) and and a few things become apparent: This thing is really well built. The straps are attached with 2 stainless rivets to a null flap on the nether end of the mat. The strain is obvious but not alarming - the material does not appear to be overburdened. The straps have a good 5.5-6" of play in them and are attached to what appear to be military quality quick-release nylon buckles. The fill/release valve has a ridged plastic cap over a copper valve set into a hard plastic diamond-shaped anchor, apparently heat welded to the mat shell (as are the seams around the mat). Unfurling the mat is simply a matter of opening the valve and releasing the buckles. The open cell foam starts sucking in air immediately. Experience has taught me that blowing into the valve until the mat is rigidly filled makes for a much more comfortable night and it is relatively easy to do, but not as easy as the Therm-a-Rest mat valve allows.

Fully inflated I get 1-5/8" thick mat 70" x 21" inflated sleeping area. I'm a 6'1" 240 pound guy with boney hips, tailbone and shoulder blades. On a hard tile floor none of these pressure points felt solid ground. Overall, I am impressed and pleased with this product, though the carry sleeve could be improved. In fact, using the "Ninja Death Grip & double-knee" rolling technique taught by the Army, I was able to compress the mat, afterwards, below the factory roll dimensions and - surprise, surprise - the mat slipped easily into the carry sleeve. You might well be a lover of camping and leap under canvas at the first chance, but come on, admit it… camping mattresses don’t result in the best night’s sleep, do they? I mean, if it’s not your shoulder going numb, or your hip aching, then its the ear-pricking squeaks every time you roll over which make it impossible to get a good kip. And the problem is 10-fold worse when you’re sharing an airbed with someone. You end up undulating when they move and paralysed when you need a wee because you know you’ll have to wake them up as you shuffle into your shoes on the edge of your bouncy-castle bed.

But, I’m ecstatic to say that my couple-camping life has changed recently with the addition of Outwell’s magnificent 5cm thick double-sized Comfort Mat. It has resulted, and I don’t say these words lightly, in the most comfortable night’s sleep I’ve ever had in a tent. At 188cm long (6ft2), and 130cm wide (4ft3) it’s plenty big enough for two sleeping bags or even a double sheet and duvet – we’ve used both. And it’s self-inflating, which means that all you need to do is unroll it, leave it for a few minutes (I always leave it a few hours) and then do up the two valves at the head-end. Et voila… that’s it. No back-breaking inflation ritual with the sounds of humping donkeys. The underside of the mat is covered in non-slip dots which ensure that the mat doesn’t shoot off down your tent when you get up off it (mind you, you’d need a huge tent for a 6ft2 mattress to shoot off anywhere). And the topside is covered in a nice and quiet material so your sleeping bag doesn’t go “shhhhhh” every time you move.

This is definitely a car-camping product. Even packed down in the bag it comes with, it’s pretty enormous. It also weighs around 4Kg, so it’s not the kind of thing you could backpack with. Oh, and it’s not the easiest thing to compress. I just keep ours in the Velcro tie-wrap (supplied), and we’ve used it in the house when we’ve had unexpected guests – it’s certainly comfy enough for that. SUMMARY: If you’re after a good night’s sleep on a double bed in a field somewhere, but can’t lug the Divan from home then this mat is a superb alternative. It truly is very, very comfortable. Downsides could be the packing size and weight, but I can see past that and appreciate that this is for those luxurious home-from-home camping breaks. You just had a great night camping with your family and friends. You swam in the lake. You played some games. You sat by the fire and roasted marshmallows. But now, it’s about 5 in the morning and you’re waking up with horrible back pain.

If you’re looking for the best air mattress for camping, this is undoubtedly it. While any air mattress is a good air mattress when it comes to camping, there several things that set each mattress apart. For the purpose of camping, a mattress that can be inflated and set up quickly is ideal. Depending on how many people you intend to have sleep on the mattress, you must choose an appropriate size. It’s important that, regardless of the size, there is some extra space on the outside of each person on the mattress. This will keep everyone toward the center, preventing the sides from closing in and pressing all of the air toward the middle of the mattress. The most obvious advantage of using an air mattress during camping is that it will keep you comfortable while you sleep. Sleeping on the ground can be rather uncomfortable, and if you already have existing back problems, it can instigate spurts of pain. Another possible advantage of using an air mattress when camping is that it will keep your dry inside your tent.

Between rain and dew, some tents can take on a bit of liquid throughout the night. Sleeping on an air mattress will keep that liquid from making contact with your body. When trying to choose an air mattress for camping, the most essential aspect to consider is how comfortable it is. If your air mattress is comfortable, you probably won’t have any complaints. However, that doesn’t mean that comfort is the only thing you should consider. With camping comes a number of obstacles that require more from your air mattress than just its comfort. While you must consider its size and thickness, you must also consider the material it’s made of as well as its inflation capabilities. Air mattresses are available in a number of different sizes, from single-person sleepers, to Twin sizes, to Queen sizes. When purchasing one, you should consider who might possibly use it in the future. If you think more than one person will ever use it at one time, you should go with something bigger, like a Queen.

If you need something for backpacking, a single-person air mattress will work just fine. When it comes to construction materials, air mattresses are fairly limited. While most are made of PVC, some are made of urethane plastic and rubber. Typically, the PVC air mattresses provide both the best comfort and durability. It should also be noted that many air mattresses have suede or plush surfaces to provide extra comfort. When it comes to sleeping outdoors, you’re going to have to deal with uneven ground, tree roots, and rocky soil. To counteract these elements, you’re going to want to an air mattress that’s thick enough so that you can’t feel anything through it while you’re laying on it. When you set up camp, you have a lot of work to do. From unloading firewood, to setting up tents, and more, you must put forth a lot of effort. That’s why the inflation capabilities that your air mattress possesses are important. While some mattresses require you manually blowing them up with your mouth or an external pump, others are able to blow themselves up either through an internal electronic device or built-in pump.
