We are located at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountains, just outside of Hartbeespoort, South Africa. Karongwe is family owned by a father and son team, Tino and Dalain Roets. All our furniture items are hand crafted, one of a kind and exclusively available directly from our factory.

We pride ourselves on the fact that all our furniture items are manufactured using solid wood. Even drawer bottoms and backboards of cabinets are solid wood. Our facility is set up to manufacture our standard range of Bedroom furniture, Diningroom Furniture, Home Entertainment and Lounge Furniture, Executive Office Furniture and also to continue in our history of custom built furniture. We work primarily with indigenous African Hardwoods, specializing in All Brown Kiaat. Some of our pieces incorporate hand carved African or North-American Animals that can be carved directly onto the wood. Solid All Brown Kiaat Drawer Drawers and boxes are joined with through dovetail joints. These joints are very difficult to make but extremely strong. Mortice and Tennon joints are very carefully cut to ensure a perfect, snug fit that guarantees the integrity of each joint made. All pieces are solid wood right through. All drawer bottoms, backs of cabinets, even concealed components are solid wood, with no plywood or hardboard used.

All cabinet fittings utilised are of the highest quality. We use imported self closing pot-hinges on cabinet doors. And imported double extended stainless steel roller bearing slides on all drawers. Even in this age of imitation, real wood still serves the need for contemporary living. Our furnishings are prized by those who demand the finest functional showpieces, made from man’s oldest, yet most interesting modern material… By using traditional constructing methods with no imitation materials we love its individual structure, grain patterns and character markings. We simply call it “Fingerprints of Nature” We request a deposit of 50% of the value of the order to confirm the order, with the balance being paid on completion. Payment is very simple and may be done via EFT, direct bank transfer. Please Contact Us for our banking details. At Karongwe Rarewood Furniture each piece is made to order and handcrafted using traditional construction methods. You can imagine, handcrafting a fine piece of furniture cannot be rushed, and the process will take a minimum of 6-8 weeks for most products.

After receipt of your order, the order goes to our production planner. Our facility is set up in work cells and not a production line. The cabinet maker will hand select every piece of timber. He will follow the progress closely until the item is ready for assembly. This concept insures that he is familiar with what the requirement is and that all the parts are absolutely perfect for the application. After the product has been assembled, it is hand sanded to a smooth finish before it is sprayed / finished. We finish our furniture with 4 coats of nitrocellulose clear lacquer. We have selected this lacquer finish for its excellent clarity and depth, as well as its heat, water, solvent, acid and alkali resistance. The finish is rubbed down between each coat after being allowed to cure thoroughly to ensure a silky smooth finish of optimum clarity and strength. Outdoor furniture is finished with Danish Oil. You are very welcome to Contact Us should you require any information regarding the progress of your order.

We are very proud of our business and especially our factory where we manufacture and showcase our exclusive Kiaat furniture. We want to take you through our doors and into the heart of our factory to show you where and how our furniture is manufactured. From very humble beginnings we started manufacturing furniture in a 200 square meter facility. We moved into our new premises in October 2004 and our current factory holds 3000 square meter of production space. We kiln dry our own timber and move the dry timber into our timber warehouse. The dry timber is hand selected according to the jobcard at hand. The timber is selected so that grain patterns and colour is evenly matched throughout. The timber is cut into smaller parts that will be laminated to form the larger parts of the furniture piece. Before the parts can be laminated it is passed through a F-joint cutter. This cutter ensures that the parts fit snug and increases the glueing area for optimal strength. The parts are then laminated and left to cure for 24 hours.

When the glue has cured the parts are removed and passed through a wide belt sander to ensure that all the parts are the same thickness. Once the parts have beed sanded the job moves to final cutting and machining. All parts are made oversize so that it can be squared 100% before assembly. Our furniture is not made on a production line but rather work cells. Each piece is made to order and gets the exact same attention to detail. Doors and drawers are made to fit each cabinet. On all doors we use a mortice and tennon joints on the frame and a floating raised panel. All drawers are made with dovetail joints and a floating drawer bottom also made of 100% solid Kiaat. The drawer bottom slides into a groove and is not fixed to the underside of the drawer frame. This ensures that the drawer bottom will never buckle and fall through. All items are hand sanded to a perfect finish and then either oiled or sealed with a nitrocellulose clear lacquer. This option depends on the client's preference.

The furniture items pass to final inspection and is then labelled. All furniture will have the order number punched onto the back. This helps to identify a furniture piece for future reference and adds value. You are very welcome to visit our factory and showroom to view our facility and to place order directly with the factory. If your items are finished with nitrocellulose lacquer it is sealed and moisture will not penetrate it, or escape from it. It is always good to clean your products using a cloth that has been moistened with furniture oil. Remember to wipe all the excess oil with a clean dry cloth seeing that the furniture item has been sealed and the oil will not penetrate into the timber. Please do not use a wax based product as this will lead to a wax build-up over time. If your items are finished with Danish Oil the wood is not sealed and applying the oil is absolutely necessary as the wood has to be nourished. We will apply the first few coats. You will have to re-oil all the furniture items, including drawer bottoms and backboards of cabinets.

Remember all our products are completely solid with no imitation material used. Oil the furniture once a week for the first six weeks, then once a month for the first six months and once a year thereafter. Ideally apply on a warm day so that the oil can penetrate to its maximum potential. Apply the Danish Oil using a cloth. Leave the oil on the furniture item for no longer than 15 minutes. Use a clean cloth and wipe all excess oil. Danish Oil is a non-mineral drying oil which has a plant oil base, therefore excellent for nourishing solid wood. All our furniture is treated with fine quality oils. Your furniture should last you a lifetime and can easily be passed on to generations to come. It is therefore up to you to treat the furniture with care. Under no cirscumstances should the furniture items be cleaned with water, soap and other detergents - this will strip it of its protective oils.If you have any queries regarding taking care of your solid wood furniture, please do not hesitate to contact us
