We believe that people with learning and other difficulties should have the same right to employment, training and volunteering as everyone else.

They should have the same opportunities to mix with the wider community, work and relax. A lot of people with learning disabilities want to be challenged, to learn and achieve new things; just like everyone else. The Feel Good Furniture Shop – Hunslet SLATE first opened its doors as a furniture shop for half a day a week in July 2004, in a discrete area of Leeds City Council Adult Social Care Moor End Day Centre with its own goods and pedestrian access.  Under the Modernisation Programme the day centre closed and SLATE now also known as “The Feel Good Furniture Shop” moved, in April 2011, to rented premises within the same community of City and Hunslet Ward in Inner South Leeds.  After undertaking a full organisational review in December 2011, funded by Adult Social Care, SLATE undertook a complete overhaul and staffing restructure in 2012 which has resulted in the formulation of The SLATE Charity Group and its expansion plan. At the end of 2012 an opportunity became available for SLATE to open up a second enterprise in a local Development Centre and on the 7th January 2013 the doors opened for “The Feel Good Café” at Hillside, Beeston Road.

The original objectives of the Café were: Over its first year of operation the café has become an integral part of the Hillside building, providing quality catering to the community tenants and professional visitors. The Feel Good Furniture Shop – Armley On the 7th March 2015 The SLATE Charity Group opened its second furniture outlet in Armley which is in a deprived inner city area of West Leeds. The SLATE Charity Group Head Office In April 2015, with loan finance from the Key Fund and a grant from Yorkshire Venture Philanthropy Fund, the Charity Group acquired a warehouse/office facility in Hunslet.    These premises will house the furniture operations collections and delivery team and also will be the new home for our proposed Volunteer Training Centre. SLATE, Unit 1, Balm Road Industrial Park, Balm Road Road, Hunslet, Leeds LS10 2BG Emmaus Leeds runs three charity shops in Leeds city centre. Our main shop is located on St Mary’s Street, close to West Yorkshire Playhouse.

From the St Mary’s Street store we sell donated furniture, white-goods, electricals, clothes, books, antiques, bric-a-brac and other goods at very low prices. We have our own on-site workshop where companions and volunteers can repair, refurbish and upcycle furniture and other goods. We also run two second-hand stalls at Kirkgate Market. These offer a different array of bargain furniture items including sofas, chairs, tables, beds, book shelves and storage units. Whether you’re looking for a nearly new settee, table and chairs, an interesting book or some fashionable vintage clothes, we have something to offer all ages and tastes. Find out more about our shops using the links below. Our charity shops generate much of the income we need to be self-sustaining. It is through the kindness of people who donate and our shop customers that we are able to continue to offer opportunities to formerly homeless people.
