Kuranda shop vendors are collaborating with local artists to reinvigorate the town's hippy image. Could removing seaweed save the Great Barrier Reef? The closed doors of shopfronts are being turned into a free public art gallery in a rainforest village once known for being a hippy haven, all in the name of increasing after-hours tourism.Kuranda, west of Cairns, has been one of far north Queensland's tourism hotspots for decades.However, in recent years the town has drawn the ire of some visitors and has become infamous for becoming something of a ghost town after 3:00pm.To combat the unfavourable reputation the town is gaining, artist and vendor Rebecca Koller has kicked off a campaign to beautify the town with shopfront street art. Ms Koller used leftover house paint and acrylic paints to convert the roller door of her shopfront into a tropical rainforest mural. "I've heard Kuranda called the roller-door city ... when visitors come up and they're not expecting everything to be closed, they're not particularly impressed to find [closed] roller doors everywhere," Ms Koller said."
There's nothing attractive about a closed roller door, and there's so much artistic talent in Kuranda that this is an opportunity to showcase art and give people a free art gallery."Some vendors have taken the opportunity to promote their business through the roller-door art, while others have chosen a beautification approach. Jean-Marie Mounier designed the artwork Ms Koller painted onto his shopfront. Jean-Marie Mounier's business was the first in the village to have its roller door painted."I came back to live here in '93 and at the time it was a hippy village; everywhere in Kuranda was full of musicians, painters, photographers, sculptors," Mr Mounier said."After 23 years here, it's drifted a lot from its artistic orientation ... the original hippy creativity has drifted towards commercialisation."Hopefully [the campaign] will motivate more people in Kuranda to recreate the artistic village [it once was] and make it something exclusive across all of Australia." Some businesses have chosen to take the opportunity to promote their goods and services in a street art style.
Mr Mounier hoped recreating the artistic, hippy vibe of the village would make tourists feel more welcome in town, even when the majority of shops were closed."A lot of tourists are renting cars, coming back from the (Atherton) Tablelands at 4.00pm or 5.00pm, and if they see only roller doors they don't know what's happening," he said."If they see the art on the doors they might say 'I have to go back to Kuranda, I have to see what's behind those doors'."And, it's for free; it's an art exhibition which is for free, and when you give things for free it always comes back to you. Kuranda artists are painting the otherwise ugly roller doors of the town's businesses to reinvigorate the town's artistic vibe. As the owner of the marketplace where the roller door art project began, Malcolm McLeod was happy to allow people to improve the look of the place."Roller doors look absolutely horrifying anywhere you go," Mr McLeod said."The project adds colour when the shops are closed and there's no doubt people come down to take pictures of them."
Hopefully it spreads through the rest of town, because there's plenty of people out there who would like to display their artwork, and what better [canvas] than a roller door?" Kuranda artist Cosima Stokeld was asked to be a part of the project and drew inspiration from the rainforest for this piece. Ms Koller was also hopeful of the campaign gaining further momentum."I want every door in Kuranda painted, basically," she said."It's already having a positive effect, and when visitors come of an afternoon they come and check out the doors and have their photos taken with them."I'm really looking forward to seeing it finished." Although roller doors are the main target of the beautification campaign, other types of doors have also been converted into works of art.
