An orchard-like grid of trees responds to the extensive orchards that surround the city of Chico, and firmly place the project in its regional context. This “orchard” provides shade to parking lots and areas around buildings. It extends to the street in lieu of street trees.

The administration and operations building is a linear single story building, with forms, materials and textures that reference nearby agricultural buildings. The bus maintenance building is more industrial in character. It features a transparent wall and translucent roll-up doors, unexpectedly revealing structural columns within. This glazing, along with overhead clerestory windows and a radiant floor slab will provide a well-lit, comfortable work environment for bus mechanics. Large shade canopies are covered by a photovoltaic array capable of meeting most or all of the facility’s electrical needs, while providing shade for a significant portion of the bus fleet. The photovoltaic array is one of many sustainable design features of the project. The project will seek certification at the LEED Silver level. TLCD Architecture parterned with a ROP class at Chico High School on this project. Students in this class attended key meetings, participated in design charrettes with the owner and design team, and developed models, images, and fly-throughs of the project.
