People began experimenting with refrigeration systems for trailers in the late 1800s, but it wasn't until the 1940s that mechanical refrigeration became common. Inventors quickly realized that ice melted way too quickly to be a viable way to keep produce and other items cold during transport. The frozen food industry took off after World War II, when reefer trailers with mechanical refrigeration systems became the most common way to transport food from one place to another. These refrigeration units are generally run by a small diesel engine that is quiet and efficient. The older refrigeration units used freon for cooling, but the use of freon was banned because of its affect on the environment.

Newer trailers use a coolant called R-134a, which is much more environmentally friendly and still works well to efficiently cool the space inside the trailer. Most refrigerated trailers measure between 48 and 55 feet in length, and several door configurations are available. Some have a roll-up door in the back, while others have two doors that swing out. Many reefer trailers also have a door on the side of the trailer for easier access to the cargo. It's great to have doors for access to various compartments, but it's also important to remember that more doors allow more opportunity for cold air to escape and warm air to enter the compartment. More openings mean that the refrigeration unit has to work harder to maintain a consistent temperature. Here are some features that may be available on the reefer trailers listed for sale on our site: Electric back-up for cooling unit Refrigerated transportation has limited space and a direct correlation to energy savings.

Typical insulation in a reefer truck is two inches of polyurethane which has an R-value of 12. Utilizing our 1/4” VIP could effectively double the truck’s insulation performance. As fuel prices continue to escalate, the cost of cooling goods during shipping become greater. The cooling unit on a typical reefer trailer will consume approximately 2000 gallons of diesel fuel annually. The use of VIPs can reduce that consumption to as low as 750 gallons or a savings of nearly $4000 at today's diesel fuel prices. The chart below indicates the fuel savings effect of adding VIPs to different sections of a reefer trailer Thermal resistance of a roll-up door is only ~1/2 that of an equivalent thickness PU wall because of thermal bridges. It can't really be made thicker. In smaller reefer units, thermal loss through the door can be 15-20% of the overall thermal load. This is because of the vast differences in thermal conductivity of the materials used in a door (Al: 200 W/mK, Plastics: 0.2 W/mK, PU Foam: 0.024 W/mK, Kevothermal™: 0.0036 W/mK).

Published results show ~50% of heat transport is through thermal bridges. For a 2" rollup door, a reduction of 30-40% of total door heat flow is possible.Page Error There is an error with the page or the page you are trying to reach. TODCO, Transportation Division of Overhead Door Corporation, introduces WeatherTite Pro, the next generation weather-resistant roll-up door for trailer and truck body applications. WeatherTite Pro improves upon the TODCO WeatherTite door that eliminated problems of swelling, warping, finish delamination and rotting experienced with wood roll-up doors when it debuted 15 years ago. The new door takes these benefits to a new level, using 100% recyclable and highly engineered co-polymer panels that reduce weight and improve heat tolerance. A WeatherTite Pro panel weighs 25% less than standard WeatherTite panels and 37% less than ¾-inch wood and ¼-inch plate-style panels, increasing payload potential. Lighter door weight will also allow the option of installing a long-life counterbalance spring that reduces downtime and maintenance costs. Results of ASTM D648 Heat Deflection Testing at 66 psi conducted by TODCO shows WeatherTite Pro has a 23% higher heat tolerance than standard WeatherTite panels, reducing the opportunity for warpage in hotter climates.
