You have to be careful not to step on the parakeets. Very small children might be frightened of the birds flocking towards them. There are several netted areas to walk within. The 18-acre facility features spacious, walk- through aviaries displaying birds from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Some of the aviaries made it difficult to take pictures because of the netting. They really should try to come up with a solution to this problem. The only way I could get pics in some of the areas was to lean in as far as I could and snap a pic between the netting or zoom in between the... When we have family in town we always look for things to do so we are not sitting at home. We stumbled across this place and decided to drive the 1-1/2 hours from Raleigh to get there. We spent almost two hours there looking at all the exotic birds. The grounds were well kept and nice to walk around in.... This is a fantastic place to come and learn about ducks, geese and swans! Bring your binoculars and because the wetlands and wild lands surrounding the facility is full of some fantastic wildbirds too! And there is a special treat for kids or the kid in the adult to experience bird feeding also!
A fabulous bird sanctuary only an hour and a half from Raleigh. One walks through aviaries with the opportunity to feed many of the species, of which there are an amazing variety of birds from around the world. Beautiful sounds and colors. Well worth the time. I traveled an hour and a half from Raleigh to visit and it was well worth the trip. Beautiful birds of all kinds on lovely grounds. It was a wonderful experience to feed the flamingos and parakeets. I highly recommend buying the seed sticks and allowing them to land on you as they enjoy a snack. This is a little gem tucked away in Scotland Neck! We came here with a family of young children, teens, grandparents and parents and we loved it. The birds in this bird park are well looked after and very comfortable showing off their beautiful and unique features. The park is well laid out, informative and well equipped with friendly staff... Hard to photograph in many of the areas because of fencing. Nice birds to see but from what I had heard, I expected more
and better opportunities to photograph different bird species. Area is well laid out and the provided map was a help. I was glad to be able to use a tripod, but it was hard to get... The Sylvan Heights Bird Park offers visitors an opportunity to not only view hundreds of birds, but you can walk through several aviaries and even feed some birds. Purchase a seed stick for one dollar and enjoy parakeets perching on your hand or arm. Don't be alarmed if one perches on your head momentarily.
