Ho Chi Minh City> Shopping for shoes in Saigon Shoes are among the most difficult thing I have managed to find during the fair amount of shopping I have done during my time in HCMC — those of us from the Western world have big feet, much bigger than your average local’s. If you’re on the lookout for a pair of shoes in Saigon, here are a few places you can go. Your best bet for finding Western-sized shoes is not by going to the Crescent or the Vincom Centre and shopping in real stores — rarely will an authorised retail store carry anything over a size 42 in men or 38 in women (so if you’re a woman who is desperate for running shoes you can find bigger men’s styles). Instead, head to one of the places I mentioned when covering shopping in Saigon: Ben Thanh Market or one of the Saigon Squares. Inside you will find the occasional stall completely dedicated to shoes and since they deal with large foreigners on a daily basis, they are more likely to carry larger shoe sizes.

This is not to say you’ll have a huge collection to choose from but at least you will be able to find something. Expect prices to be quoted high, forcing you to bargain hard; at Ben Thanh a hard bargainer could easily save themselves 50 percent of the asking price, while at Saigon Square you may have to fight hard just to save 20,000 VND. If you’re having trouble in the markets or you think the prices are too high, head to Luu Van Lang Street right next to the Ben Thanh Market. This street is sometimes referred to as shoe street, as dozens of shoe shops litter the short block. Like the markets, selection in larger sizes is limited but I think the prices are more on the fair side — however, the majority of the street’s shoes is limited to flats, sandals and Crocs. If you experience a broken strap on your journey, this is where I would head to find a replacement. My final suggestion would be to browse some of the boutiques outside of the downtown area, specifically on Le Van Sy Street in District 3.

Finding shoes here take more time as larger sizes are hit and miss, but the shoes here are definitely more unique. Plus, since bigger sizes aren’t flying off the shelves, they are willing to deal. If you’re worried about wasting time, they are upfront about the sizes they have. Simply ask the shopkeeper if they have your size and they will lead you to the few pairs that may fit. It has taken time, but I have found some awesome shoes this way.Around Saigon, a few cobblers can set you up with custom-made shoes, however I’ll cover that in more detail in a later post.Last updated on 8th February, 2017. To plot their itinerary, Fortunato looked to social media. "Blog and Instagram research is my go-to method for trip planning," she says. One hyperlink or hashtag leads to another, and another. "Before long, some well-traveled, stylish British girl whom you’ve never even met has become your tour guide, as opposed to a guidebook or an outfitter with a tendency to spoon-feed clients all the same information. Doing it yourself adds another step to the planning process, that's true, but I find that the resulting trip feels so much more rewarding and personalized." To start, the couple flew into Hong Kong and stayed just 24 hours to beat the jet lag.

Fortunato suggests cabbing to the top of Victoria Peak and walking the Morning Trail—on clear days, she says it "delivers beautiful views of the city's harbor." The restaurant you don't want to miss is Maison Libanaise, inspired by 1960s Beirut in the busy Soho neighborhood. Here the designer shares the entire trip and all her hard-won pro-tips with us. Route: Fly Dragon Air to Hanoi and head north to Halong Bay.Stay: Indochina Junk sails into the less-crowded Bai Tu Long Bay. Fortunato was on the Dragon Pearl, a luxe 95-foot boat that offers 11 cabins with private baths. Meals are taken on the dark teak deck at tables laid with traditional hand-painted Vietnamese ceramics.Do: Debark for tiny Paradise Island to explore the caves and kayak around the bay. See: The blue-green bay’s limestone karsts at sunset.Tip: "We loved sitting on the upper deck and watching the sun fall into the water between the bay’s two thousand islets."It turns out that pho is the ideal breakfast food.

So nourishing—a bowlful will power you until lunchtime. Route: Drive from Bai Tu Long Bay back down to Hanoi, the country’s capital. Stay: Sofitel Legend Metropole is a storied establishment in the French Quarter, where everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Brangelina has stayed. Do: Get up early to walk around the central Hoan Kiem Lake, where locals gather at dawn to exercise, play volleyball and badminton, and meditate. Around 8 a.m., breakfast on pho—the best Fortunato found was at Phở Thìn. Stop to buy fresh flowers from the vendors whose bikes overflow with lilies and wander through the Old Quarter's tiny streets, which are arranged according to the products they sell (there's a sneaker street).Shop: Vintage Bac Thai textiles. Route: Fly Vietnam Air to Siem Reap, Cambodia.Stay: Rooms at the Belmond La Residence d’Angkor are fruit- and flower-filled sanctuaries.Do: Visit Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world and the most famous of Cambodia’s temples—and you'll do even better by hiring a private guide to lead you through back entrance.

Find shade at Ta Prohm, where the jungle has overtaken a 12th-century Buddhist monastery and university. Escape the masses with an afternoon visit to Angkor Thom, Fortunato's favorite temple, perhaps because of the vista after climbing nearly vertical steps to the top. Definitely try to make it to Siem Reap's countryside—Fortunao recommends the bike tour offered by Grasshopper Adventures, which took them through rice paddies (where water buffalo graze), a crocodile farm, and a colorful Buddhist cemetery marked by an elaborate pagoda and elephant stupas.Eat: Doughnuts at the village market.Shop: The Khmer Ceramics and Fine Arts Centre, where you can take classes and buy locally made pottery. For good souvenirs, visit the Old Market, which sells traditional Krama scares, horn and shell utensils, and bronze bells.Tip: "Most people only visit Siem Reap for the temples, so we dodged the tourists on our bikes and went to see a local market offering clothes, dry goods, fish, and vegetables."

Route: Fly Vietnam Air to Ho Chi Minh City and connect to Côn Sơn, the largest of the South China Sea's Côn Đảo Islands. Stay: Six Sense Con Dao means oceanfront treehouse-like villas (with private pools) overlooking the crystalline sea.Do: Venture into the island’s small town on scooter; admire the gorgeous fishing boat scene from the pier.Tip: "The boardwalks, low-slung buildings, and luxe bedding will give you such apartment envy. Also, bring your resortwear."If you're looking for the holy grail of tailors, it's Minh at DungMy boyfriend ordered bespoke suits, jackets, and shirts, and I had my favorite blazer by The Row remade. Route: Fly Vietnam Air to Ho Chi Minh City and take an hour Uber ride to the Saigon River.Stay: An Lam Saigon River is a secret garden oasis about an hour outside of bustling Ho Chi Minh City.Do: Lounge by the pool, watch the boats swan by.Route: When you’re ready for the commotion of the city, throttle down the river on the hotel’s speed boat.
