Back to the front pageAn appreciation of historical design details comes naturally to Rebecca Denholm. Formerly an architecture student, she runs a design library sourcing vintage textiles and unusual dress patterns, which brands such as Chloé, Sonia Rykiel and Paul Smith have used as inspiration for collections. Bridal designers mine her Pocket Library for ideas,  and super-stylist Katie Grand, editor-in-chief of the biannual glossy Love, has used her pieces in shoots.

Rebecca and her husband, artist Mark Mcevoy, bought their Georgian home in Glasgow 13 years ago and set about restoring it. All its period features had been stripped, so the couple have gradually filled it with a mix of contemporary furniture and colourful vintage finds to create a stylish home for themselves and their dog Finn, a Bedlington whippet cross. What was the house like when you moved in? It had been a car garage, then an office. Although the previous owner had put in a kitchen and bathroom, it was pretty 'officey’ and lacking in character. But the location – hidden in the hillside right in the middle of the city – felt magical. How long did the renovations take?I was an architecture student at the time, so the only experience I had was theoretical. We learnt as we went along, doing lots of the building ourselves. There were long periods where we paused to save for materials and, halfway through the build, my back was injured in a train crash. I remember coming home to a building site with no kitchen and deciding the mayhem had to end.

I dropped out of my course to finish the house and, although I meant to go back, I got caught up in the weird world of vintage libraries instead. How would you describe your decorating style?I imagine what a space will feel like to live in, rather than just what it will look like.  I’m very methodical and practical when it comes to planning space: I need good storage because I’ve  collected a lot of stuff. It can feel overwhelming if it’s all on show. I need breathing space! Do you have a favourite space in the house? I like reading in front of the fire but there are lots of lovely nooks to sit in as the light shifts during the day. Everyone who visits seems to unwind. The house feels very protected by the landscape and that makes it incredibly quiet, even though it’s in the city. Your favourite design piece? My Finn Juhl BO-46 sofa. The Josef Frank fabric is  luscious and it’s super-comfy to curl up in. The Penguin Donkey bookcase, an Ernest Race classic, is very sweet too.

Mark found it for £5 in a charity shop. Admittedly, that was 12 years ago. It’s getting harder to find good stuff in charity shops now. Tell us about The Pocket Library…. It’s an archive of found things – clothing, textiles, objects – that fashion designers use as inspiration. They are beautiful old pieces with a curious energy that might spark new ideas. Design teams borrow them – hence being called a library. Some designers reference vintage in obvious ways but most use detailing as a starting point. The archive is a very tactile, visceral experience, and that fires the imagination. How did you start to work with vintage? I fell into it 12 years ago. I studied at the Glasgow School of Art and started selling old clothes at Portobello Market while visiting my dad in London. Designers who came to my stall loved the pieces I found. Soon they wanted to visit me in Glasgow and borrow things from my collection – the creative director of Sonia Rykiel used to come all the way from Paris – so the archive grew quickly.
